The rain stops but my face remains wet because of the tears I am crying right now. Inueh was the first one, the first person who welcomed me in this pack when I got here. But now, I am seeing him like this. I should not be giving away this opportunity to kill more Dark Nights but what can I do? I am not feeling well, especially now that this Inueh was in front of me. I closed my eyes, trying to stop my tears but I couldn't. They were falling down nonstop and I am waiting for my eyes to get tired so it won't release tears anymore.

When I back away, his blood drips from the chair and begins to pool beneath it. His voice is nothing more than a weak croak once his screams die off. “Just… end it…” he sobs, his head hanging, the sweat that drips from his hair mixing with his blood. I take a handful of that hair in my hand and yank his head back until we’re eye to eye. “Oh no,” I whisper, beaming down at his anguished face before dragging the bloody blade along his cheek. “You’re going to suffer until you bleed out. This is nowhere near over.”

She knocks into him, and they both go crashing down. My eyes start to flutter shut again, and between blinking them open and closed, I see Lucas twist Suzanna’s neck around. Her body goes limp and he tosses her aside. My head droops forward, and my vision fades. The distinct sound of bones breaking echoes through the pool, and the male vampire screams and cries in pain. I try to lift my head up again, forcing my eyes open. Lucas is covered in blood—not his own, of course—and a pile of ashy goo surrounds his feet. Suzanna’s hands are on her head, trying to spin her neck back into place so it can heal.

Blood drips from my chin, my palms, my ribs. The fifth step glows sickly green. I snarl and slam my torn hand down on it, shoving raw blood and fury into the crack—the stone screeches—a sound like a throat-ripping apart under too much strain. The runes burst. The teeth crack, spitting bone shards across the walls. The entire stairwell heaves—convulsing like a dying animal trying to puke up its own heart. Kael grabs my arm and yanks me upright with bruising force—no comfort, no apology.

Heat licks at my skin. I scream. A blood-curdling scream. High-pitched. Piercing. Tears roll down my cheeks and I crumple to the ground, clawing at my heart. My wolf howls. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s broken. Just like me. I look up to find Cassian sitting on his throne. A hand rubs against his chest. He looks tired, worn out… almost older than he was a few seconds ago. His eyes flash when they meet mine, and the pain I see is raw. But it doesn’t last long.

she sighed and felt confused. “Maybe it was triggered by something else. Your emotions for example, can be in two ways. One, you get angry and you feel heat inside of you. Two, you think of the people that have hurt you and instead of getting angry, you cry instead. Your tears are also emotions that converted to heat after it touched Cassian. He said he was burning inside of him. That can only explain that.” “Oh no,” Julianne covered her mouth with her palms. “I-is he fine?”

Then he spoke again. “Please,” he said, voice breaking, hands shaking where they rested on my arms. “Can I have a taste of your blood.” I froze. “What the fuck,” I whispered before I could stop myself. He was trembling now. Actually trembling. Like his body was at war with itself. His eyes were dark, desperate, not arrogant or royal or controlled. Just starving. And then the most unimaginable thing on earth happened. I saw tears. Actual tears slid down his face. I stared at him like my brain had left the chat.

I screamed. She tried to pull me back. I twisted violently, ripping my arm free. I stumbled forward slightly, then dropped to my knees beside Jacelet’s body again. My hands shook. My chest hurt. I couldn’t breathe. I wiped at my tears angrily. But they didn’t stop. I hated that. I hated that I was crying. I hated everything. Susan stepped closer again, slower this time. “Kyra… please.” Her voice was softer now. Careful. Like I was something fragile.

"You need to rest." I force my eyes open and find myself in one of the larger tents, lying on a bedroll that's far more comfortable than the one I'd been assigned. Kael sits beside me, his back against a stack of supply crates, and he looks like death warmed over. His shirt is off, revealing the bandages wrapped around his shoulder where the Voidrake's talons caught him. The Bloodwraith Mark is fully visible on his ribs, still glowing faintly red. But it's his eyes that capture my attention. The silver has faded back to its normal intensity, but I can see the exhaustion in them, the strain of maintaining control for so long.
