With a quick motion, I hurled the metals into the swimming pool of the abandoned warehouse that served as my refuge. I am Scarlett, the last mutant and werewolf following the rogue-led third-world invasion. I've been in hiding for years, and I despise interruptions... My thoughts drifted as the metals, previously floating in the air, suddenly plummeted to the ground. I couldn't dodge the heavy iron pieces crashing down on me, nor could I shift into my wolf form for safety. "What on earth is happening?" I shouted, shielding my head with my arms. My eyes widened in horror, realizing that each falling piece could seriously harm an ordinary human.

The scent of his blood sent a chill down my spine, and a red haze covered my vision. I was going to save my mate and kill every last wolf who had dared to touch him. Scarlett let out a snort next to me while she and her guards slowed. We were close. I dropped to the ground, rolling around in the dirt and trying to mask my scent as much as possible. I froze when the sound of someone moving closer reached me, but one of Scarlett's guards broke away from the group stealthily. He moved swiftly through the shadows, giving honor to their pack name.

But since it was carried with her and no one was able to steal it, I didn't much care if I understood the mechanics of it. With a silent quiver of Scarlet's lips, the sword was engulfed in flames. She pointed it at Aryn. "Aryn, my name is Scarlet. You've hurt one of my friends. One of my family. I'll give you to the count of three before I start causing you pain. If you don't comply, I'll begin hurting the people you hold most dear. If that doesn't work, I'll bring Kiema in here and have her rip open your psyche, your emotions, and anything else she can. You would do well to heed my warning now." Scarlet held the fiery sword even with Aryn's neck.

Even now, as I lay upon the gleaming white floor of Moose Creek’s medical centre, sedative spilling through my veins and blood streaming from my chest, photos of the futures forking from this moment blinded me. I saw Scarlett stood amidst the dead, the only survivor in a war she’d never asked for. I saw her bent over her mate’s body, sobs wracking through her. Then I saw her fumble for the outstretched claws of a fallen werewolf and use them to slit her own throat.

Boom! A resounding crash echoed nearby as the wooden door of the courtyard was violently kicked open. Though Adrian's appearance had driven away some patrons, a few reckless gamblers remained, ensnared by their vices. The invading members of the Scarlet Star wasted no time and launched into a frenzy of destruction and looting. Their rampage spared no one, targeting both Sable Emblem affiliates and hapless gamblers alike. Chaos ensued, with casualties mounting rapidly. Three or four hundred individuals clad in crimson robes, representing Scarlet Star, descended upon Sable Emblem's headquarters. Caught off guard, Sable Emblem's defenses crumbled within minutes, leaving their base in ruins.

Grey had watched Scarlett grow into the strong, capable woman she was today, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and affection. Scarlet glanced up at the other side of the chasm and saw a smile spread across Octal’s horrifically disfigured face. Without a second of hesitation, Scarlet leapt off the ledge like a diver from a diving board, and soared downward toward Sage’s falling figure. Seconds before he hit the ocean she swept him up into her arms. “I’ve got you,” she whispered, holding him to her chest. Sage was heavy. Scarlet was only able to hover. They were barely inches above the treacherous water. She knew she couldn’t fly up because that would reveal to Octal that they had survived and he would launch an attack on them right away.
