Ten-year-old Bree chimed as Emma looked over her shoulder worriedly. “That’s nice, sweetie. Why don’t you tell me about that mermaid story again?” “I hate that story. Can I tell the one about the wolf?” Bran chimed in. “Wolf?” Patrick asked as Brinna looked out the window and saw another animal running alongside their vehicle. “Yeah, the one that eats the girl in the red hood.” “Mommy, I don’t like that story. It is scary.” Bree snuck at the rolling landscape and saw the scary animal with sharp teeth sneering at her, so she pretended to look forward and saw her parents exchange a look.

Christian nodded yes and I grabbed and tickled him until he couldn’t laugh anymore. “Okay let’s see what this story is about.” I took the book and read to him while he lay next to Adara and held her hand. His eyes closed at the fourth paragraph and I read two more to make sure he was sleeping. We kissed him goodnight on his forehead and left the night light on. Some nights he was afraid of the dark and other nights it didn’t bother him at all. I wasn’t worried. It was normal for kids to be afraid of the dark. Especially if they saw a dead woman in it talking to them.

Tonight was our first official sleepover in the treehouse, and we'd dragged up sleeping bags, flashlights, and enough snacks to last a week. "Tell me a scary story," Avy said, settling into her sleeping bag. "I don't know any scary stories." "Make one up." "Okay, um..." I pointed my flashlight at my face for dramatic effect. "Once upon a time, there was a girl who read so many books that her eyes fell out." "That's not scary, that's stupid." "Fine. There was a boy who was so bad at football that the football grew teeth and ate him." Avy giggled. "You're terrible at this."

Marcus just chuckled and ruffled his hair. "Wait till you're older." That night, after the kids were asleep, Sarah found herself pinned between Adam and Marcus in their bed, Jeff's mouth working a bruise into her thigh. "Thought we were done?" she gasped as Adam's teeth grazed her collarbone. Jeff's laugh was dark. "Never." Lia's voice crackled through the baby monitor...."Daddy, I had a bad dream." Marcus rolled off with a sigh, but not before palming Sarah's breast.

Just remember, if you don’t want things to go bump in the night, don’t tell anyone else about them. Even now the shadows in my room play havoc with my subconscious, so I turn the light on and sleep with one eye open. Also, when my computer starts to go on the fritz just as I write a particularly spooky part of a story, I chuck it up to chance and swallow a little harder before checking to make sure that I have only one shadow. It’s amazing that I still get so scared as an adult. You sure would have thought that for someone who makes a living scaring people, I would know better, right?

The little girl in the bed giggled as her father tickled her Adam Hale was alive and well and was sitting at the side of his daughter's bed, he kissed her forehead and tucked her into the princess pink blankets and got up to turn off the lights. “One more story daddy please” The little girl whimpered. Adam just smirked looking at his daughter and tried to con him into telling her another scary story. “Nice try, that was the eighth story that I told you since I came into your room an hour ago. Now go to bed little one, I love you.”

I asked frowning, I have never heard about this. Ray laughed, “ It was in the bedtime stories, my mother and granny used to recite them to us to make us scared of going out in the middle of the night. you know how pups are! As soon as they start shifting that’s what they all want to do for a long time. The male pups even go out at night to run through the woods. So to keep me and my brothers safe, my mother and granny told us this myth. How at night a creature who is not man nor beast roams the landing of woods and if pups go there, he will eat them.”

For one, I have seen many wolves who are much bigger than him, and for two, I know I am about to leave this place. "Shakira will sort you," he growls out before finally leaving just as before. I sigh as the door latches from outside. Lucifer will be here soon to collect me. All I have to do is wait. "Shakira, who is Shakira," one of the more beaten girls asks as she looks around the room.
