"That's what Christmas is all about, isn't it? The spirit of giving." Kiki nodded as she watched Santa pass out the gifts to the children, one by one. "It sure is." Children squealed with delight as they opened their gifts. At that moment, Kiki didn't want to be anywhere else. She and Evelyn spent the rest of the evening watching the children open gifts until they could hardly hold their eyes open. When the last gift had been passed out, Santa gathered the children around and read A Visit from St. Nicholas, better known as 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. A few minutes later, Abby approached Kiki, her eyes drooping.

It read, in big block print, “Santa’s Workshop.” “Right,” Serendipity nodded, realizing that if she could read, she would have known that. Her face lost a bit of the glimmer from before, but she still stared in awe. “How amazing!” she whispered, looking up at several stories of glass windows and the brightly dressed elves scurrying about with various toys, different patterns of wrapping paper, and other items essential to making and finishing off Christmas presents.

Ten-year-old Bree chimed as Emma looked over her shoulder worriedly. “That’s nice, sweetie. Why don’t you tell me about that mermaid story again?” “I hate that story. Can I tell the one about the wolf?” Bran chimed in. “Wolf?” Patrick asked as Brinna looked out the window and saw another animal running alongside their vehicle. “Yeah, the one that eats the girl in the red hood.” “Mommy, I don’t like that story. It is scary.” Bree snuck at the rolling landscape and saw the scary animal with sharp teeth sneering at her, so she pretended to look forward and saw her parents exchange a look.

He was tall, really tall for a Santa Claus, that I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes—oh, his eyes. They were an icy gray that seemed to bare my soul, uncovering every hidden secret before his eyes. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, but I couldn't tell if it was from the cold or the way those eyes made me feel, something so distinct yet I couldn't put my hands on it. “Merry Christmas,” he murmured, his deep baritone causing my heart to thrum so loudly in my chest I could only stand there and gawk like a damn fool.

No amount of argument could change that. My little brother Josh was in the living room watching cartoons when I scurried past him. I raced down into the snowy street. The snow was an ankle deep. I jumped around, spreading my hands as wide as I could. Christmas in the air! That smell! That smell that makes you feel good and happy just once in a whole year. I walked two steps, stopped and put my hands into my Christmas coat. A smile curved into my lips as I watched the houses in our street. They were covered in snow flakes. It made the houses look like a little mountain or something in my imagination. Each house already had a special decoration on or is still struggling with it.

She didn't want to hear anymore of the frightening story. "Don't tell me you're all scared. It's a myth, I made it up!" John smirked, his eyes gazing at the scared faces of his girlfriend and friends. "Ha ha ha, scared? I've never been scared of anything in my life!" Rocky roared in laughter as he rose from the ground. "Scary stories don't scare me. I'm gonna pee!" He uttered still grinning. "Don't wander far into the woods, you never know who you'll meet." John warned in a playful but spooky voice.

Jones stared at Claire as she whispered, “What happened next?” Suddenly, she was a little girl again. He used to tell her scary stories about werewolves, vampires, fae, and warlocks. May hated it, but he couldn’t say no when his little niece looked up at him with big eyes and asked so politely for a story. He would always stopped at the climax, sighed dramatically, and say that it’s too scary. She would grab his hand and say she wasn’t scared, that she would be brave. She would ask, so excited, “What happened next?”

“I work with time and it’s almost time for me to do something else.” “Alright... stay safe, December is tomorrow and this year’s Christmas will be very long.”“Hahaha... it reminds me of long Halloween. Only that, this time around, no one will be on costumes. No one is trick or treating and Santa is gonna come earlier than normal...” she glanced at the tv,“... am I right, Hendricks?”

I ask her. “Well, Halloween.” “I love Halloween. I like to dress up as a werewolf,” I say, making her laugh. “That’s also when all the scary movies are on TV.” “I’m not a big fan of the scary movies,” she says. “That’s okay, this time of year, some networks start showing the Christmas movies. Oh and you know what? I just remembered, there’s a HUGE Christmas display in the city. They have music, hot chocolate, lights, all of it. I’d love to take you there. We could make it a date night,” I say, watching her reaction.
