Chris nodded, examining a collection of ‘cursed’ amulets. “Yeah, but kind of fascinating too, don’t you think?”

I took one turn and then another, but the staircase was nowhere to be found. Panic began to creep into my chest as the paintings stared down at me from the walls, grotesque and violent. Warriors with spears plunging into their chests, heads of serpents mounted as trophies, and snarling animals frozen mid-kill. Their glassy eyes gleamed in the dim light, scaring the hell out of me.

They were simple designs, just a big head with two large eyes and a small body, but this only made the stuffed animals look cuter. Aside from the rabbit and the wolf, Ryder made a cat with the pieces left from the white textile used for the rabbit. The cat was smaller than the other two animals, not bigger than a fist, but Ryder couldn't help and smile whenever she saw it. She was too satisfied with how it had come out.

When they finally groaned open, a thick cloud of musty air drifted out. Cobwebs hung like curtains in the entryway. I ducked instinctively, swatting the air. “Charming,” I muttered. The interior was dim and heavy with dust. To the left were carved stone nameplates worn by time. On the right, urns sat along a shelf—three of them behind dusty glass. Inside each display case was a child’s toy. “That’s just sad,” I murmured. Sarah stepped closer, peering at the doll behind the glass. “Okay, that’s officially the creepiest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Goosebumps pebbled along my arms, followed by a chill that invoked a cold sweat that trickled down the back of my neck. Shelves upon shelves of books lined the walls, but they were unlike any books I’d ever seen before. As I pondered what kind of animal the leather had come from I spotted one text that had a splotch of ink on the front. It looked like an old tattoo. Feeling eyes on me, I spun around to find another shelf. This one was crammed with little wooden figurines. Their jewel eyes stared out at me, frozen and unblinking. Moving onto another shelf, I found old specimen jars filled with preserved animals and what I assumed were embalmed organs.

I guess seeing a six-foot-seven-inch man built like a bodybuilder pushing a baby-pink stroller and a short girlfriend beside him is a sight to see. “We could head to Wal-Mart and look in the electronic section and grab snacks all in one go.” He suggests, and I nod. Wal-Mart is located on the other side of the mall, and we took the time to window shop and enjoy the stroll. Before we reach Wal-Mart, I come to a stop in front of Build-A-Bear, practically dragging Tate into the store to create three wolf stuffies for each of us. Oddly-clothed mannequins posed in mentally challenging spaces were scattered about amid burning giraffes, melting watches, and in one area, a ceiling covered in suspended umbrellas and hung with bats and telephones gave Evelyn nightmares for several nights afterwards.

“How about we get you a stuffed snake instead? That way, it won’t bite.” She considered this for a moment, her little brow furrowing in thought. Then she nodded, her face lighting up again. “Okay! Stuffed snake!” Talon chuckled, his deep voice vibrating through both of us. “You drive a hard bargain, kiddo.” We made our way to the gift shop, Scarlett’s energy miraculously restored as she bounced ahead of us, pointing at every stuffed animal she saw.
