The woman looking back at me wore a gown made of midnight itself, black silk that seemed to swallow light and shadow flames dancing along the hem. Her dark hair was twisted into a crown of braids, and her eyes... her eyes were no longer brown. They were silver, cold as winter stars. This was Lunara Blackthorne. The Shadow Queen.

“A certain friend once told me that, no matter what day or time it is, they'll always be a shadow, lingering in the darkness and ready to strike. But I should always be on guard.” I chuckled silently, tugging a strand of hair behind my ears. “And this friend of yours happens to be who?” She licked her lower lip, “She’s the greatest Luna and fighter I've ever seen in my entire life.” A smile formed on her face, “Do you want to know her name?” I nodded gently and she leaned closer, her breath fanning against my earlobe. “She is Selene Blackwood, Luna of the highest ranking wolf pack and greatest warrior to be heard of.”

His gaze lifts. And locks onto mine. The room fades. Just for a moment. Then A voice rises above the noise. Smooth. Unfamiliar. And far too interested. “So,” the man says, stepping forward, his eyes fixed on me. “This is the new queen.” My breath catches. Because there is something in his gaze Something dark Something dangerous.

Memory. Every painting watched me pass. I should’ve left. Instead, I followed the sound of faint footsteps behind me. “Running from ghosts again, little wife?” The voice froze me. Selene. She stepped out from the shadows, the same cold beauty that had once smiled while I was dying. Her black gown shimmered like oil, and her eyes were silver tonight, not steel. Unnatural. Hungry. “You look better,” she said with a smile that wasn’t one. “Poison suits you.”

In his rush of adrenaline, he had completely forgotten that there were still males around the castle, now, about twenty guards surrounded him with their eyes fixed solely on Daphne. “Move”, he growled with so much authority, it shook the atmosphere but none of them did as they were told. The luna queen was said to have the strongest and most capturing scent out of all the female lycans, this made all the want her and their eyes were fixed on the prize. “Move”, he repeated, just to receive the same reply.

My ribs, bruised from Vane’s hammer, screamed in protest. Halfway up, a figure blocked my path. It was Selene. She stood on a landing, her bone-beast gone, replaced by a cloak made of living shadows that writhed around her. Her face was pale, her eyes now entirely black, devoid of even the violet flame.
