Not attached to anything. Not cast by any light. Just… there. Moving. Slowly. Deliberately. Emily’s grip on my hand tightened. “That’s it,” she whispered. I stepped slightly in front of her. The shadow shifted. Like it had noticed us. Like it was aware. It began to move toward us. Not fast. Not aggressive. But certain. Like it already knew where it was going. And who it was going for. “Stay behind me,” I said. “No,” Emily said quietly.

If anger or fear took hold of her, the gemstone would darken, turning a deep, unsettling black. The feeling of the pendant against her skin was both grounding and empowering. The cool touch of the silver filigree and the smooth surface of the gemstone provided a tactile reminder of her connection to her heritage and the protection it offered. The runes and symbols etched into the silver felt cool against her skin, their presence reassuring her that she was protected and that her powers were being kept in check.

With a swift motion, he activated a device on his suit that emitted a blinding burst of light, temporarily dispersing the shadows around them. Seizing the opportunity, Emberlyn launched herself forward once more, her movements fluid and precise. She delivered a series of calculated strikes, forcing the villain on the defensive. But the shadows were not so easily banished. As they began to creep back, the villain drew upon their power, effectively repelling Emberyln with a blast enough to rip her skin from bones. He liked keeping things in the shadow realm, just like me. We often hang out in there together. He likes watching others, and observing them through their shadow doors, just like I did. “They are all getting so big!” Ember’s voice snapped my attention. “They really are.” I sighed. “You okay?” She sensed my sadness.

Only shadows, thick and oppressive. Then the shadows shifted. Ember watched, paralysed by the scene unfolding before her. Isla’s eyes widened in alarm as she realised she was being followed—watched, hunted. The air shimmered with a heat that felt wrong, a bitterness that clawed at the edges of Ember’s consciousness. It was hungry, feral. A figure stepped forward from the shadows—towering and cloaked in swirling smoke, his features obscured by darkness. Ember’s heart raced as she felt the presence; the aura of the rival clan’s alpha was unmistakable.

It was quiet for a few minutes and he finally said, “Tilly and I have absolutely no secrets. People like you and me … we can’t be with just anyone. It’s either one night stands, fake short term relationships or nothing. You don’t just find a Tilly on every corner. A woman that will accept you, that if you are totally honest with her … won’t be afraid of you. I never had someone to … to help me. To direct me, and it damn near killed me. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I call it my dark shadow … it’s a part of me, but it’s a part of me I can mostly keep hidden, that I can control.

It looked like hope amidst the darkness that surrounds it. She shivered when the cold breeze assaulted her skin. Ember had developed this kind of habit to go out every night, when everyone was fast asleep and she would watch the darkness of the night before her. It made her feel secure and calm. And she knew she was getting weirder as her tummy got larger, and she thought it was her child who played the role of her change.
