I opened my mouth to scream, but a gloved hand instantly clamped down over my lower face, smothering the sound completely. Victor stepped out of the darkness right in front of me. He was completely silent, his breath steady, his dark eyes glittering with cold amusement in the dim moonlight. He leaned down until his lips were just inches from my ear. He slowly brought his free hand up, pressing his silver-ringed index finger against his own lips in a slow, chilling gesture of silence. "Some secrets are killed for, Sarah..." Victor whispered, his voice an icy, terrifying breath against my skin. "...and some families disappear overnight for asking too many questions."

Really looked. At the fear in his eyes. At the helplessness he was trying to bury beneath anger. And I whispered softly— “I’m still here.” Then— my fingers touched the shadow’s hand. And the world went white.

With a scream of anguish, Liora plunged her blade through his chest. The golden light flared, swallowing the shadows. “I’m sorry,” she sobbed, holding him close. Caelum smiled faintly as his body crumbled into motes of silver and black. “Thank you… little star.” The Shadow’s Whisper As his essence scattered, a faint, cold voice slithered into her mind: “Do you think this is over? While moving through the dangerous tunnels, the shadows' whispers became increasingly louder and more urgent, as if attempting to draw them back. He dissolved into it, vanishing before any blade could reach him. The silence left behind was suffocating. Zaria’s chest rose and fell, her power still crackling uncontrolled. It takes a few moments, until I am able to push away from it with a grunt, summoning the shadowed portal. As it slowly forms I hear the shadows whispers grow louder, beckoning for me. The whispers of the endless fill my head, call to my despair, and I am absolutely taken. The tendrils of shadows emerge for I am too weak to even walk through, clutching at my chest as if I could pinpoint the seed of desolation that grows within me. With the touch of shadow, it combines and loosens me, providing me with a brief notion of relief- I close my eyes at the finality, the kiss of death.

“Amelia… focus on me. You’re safe. I’m here.” Her lips moved, whispering something he could barely hear: “Go…” The Shadowborn shivered, smoke curling around its enormous frame. For a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. Then, with a guttural, almost reverent sound, it collapsed into a pile of mist, dissipating into the night like fog lifted by the first rays of dawn.
