Les Hommes-Bêtes étaient réputés pour leur force guerrière. Pour consolider le pouvoir de notre clan, mon père nous a offertes, ma demi-sœur Anaïs Moineau et moi, en mariage aux deux de ces peuples. Dans ma vie antérieure, Anaïs avait épousé le roi des Dragons, dont la richesse rivalisait avec celle de toutes les autres races réunies, tandis que j'avais été contrainte de m'unir au clan démuni des Lions. Le roi des Dragons, Gaylord Dieulafoy, homme froid et impassible, ne vivait que pour ses ambitions, négligeant complètement Anaïs. Rongée par la solitude, elle avait séduit le jeune maître volage des Renards. Leur adultère avait été découvert, et Gaylord l'avait répudiée. Notre famille en était couverte de honte. Le jour de la fête pour le premier anniversaire de mon enfant, elle l'avait étranglé, puis avait mis le feu à ma demeure pour m'y brûler vive. Quand j'ai rouvert les yeux, nous étions de retour au jour des alliances. Cette fois, Anaïs a exigé d'épouser Brice, me « cédant » ainsi Gaylord. Je l'ai accepté. Dotée d'une dot dix fois moindre que la sienne, j'ai épousé Gaylord. Par la suite ? Anaïs a épuisé toute sa dot à soutenir le Lion, et son incapacité à procréer l'a contrainte à s'accoupler avec d'autres Hommes-Bêtes. Moi qui n'aspirais qu'à un enfant et une existence paisible après la tragédie de ma vie précédente, j'ai dû faire face à une autre réalité : pourquoi mon mari, réputé froid et abstinent, me réclamait-il sans cesse depuis notre nuit nuptiale ? Et pourquoi personne ne m'avait avertie que les Dragons possédaient deux pénis… tous deux épineux ?

Au moins, comme ça, Annie ne viendra pas gâcher son bonheur. » Dans le coffre de son bureau, il conservait précieusement chaque cadeau de Lydia : pendentifs en crocs de loup, lettres marquées de ses empreintes... Même sur sa précieuse armure d'écailles, chaque plaque portait gravé le nom de Lydia. « Lydia, mon unique amour. Mes griffes trancheront tous les obstacles pour ton bonheur. » « Je t'offrirai mon cœur de loup battant, si tu le désires. » « Je te volerais même la lune, s'il le fallait ! » Ce que je croyais être cinq années de mariage heureux n'étaient qu'un mirage, et une fois la vérité révélée, tout s'est dissipé comme une brume. J'ai demandé à quitter la meute. Et dans deux jours, j'aurais disparu de la vie de Samuel pour toujours...

Nous avons déjà convenu qu'après, je divorcerai… et je t'épouserai aussitôt. » Et, encore une fois, je l'ai cru. Puis, il y a un an, lors d'un gala, on lui a tendu un piège. Drogué, il a passé la nuit avec Margaux. Il a tout caché… jusqu'à ce que, quinze jours plus tôt, je le surprenne à l'hôpital, accompagnant Margaux à une échographie. Quand j'ai compris, il a baissé les yeux, incapable de me regarder, et a murmuré : « Claire… ce n'était qu'un accident. Quand l'enfant naîtra, je l'enverrai loin. Mes parents s'en occuperont. Jamais ni elle ni l'enfant ne croiseront ta route. » Sous couvert d'amour, Éric m'a poussée, pas à pas, à tout accepter. Mais aujourd'hui, je le sais : il n'y aura plus jamais de « nous ». Il est temps pour moi de partir.

My boyfriend, Christopher Linden, was short of 20 thousand dollars for his medical treatment. To get the money as soon as possible, I participated in a rich man's game onboard a lavish cruise. I didn't bat an eye as I jumped into the ocean to search for a bracelet one of their female companions had dropped in the water. As I choked on the ocean water, I heard the man in the lead mock me, saying, "I've seen plenty of the dirty things people are willing to do for money, but you take the cake. You're even willing to give up your life for it." Someone teased, "Your girlfriend doesn't like money and is willing to forgo everything to care for you. Do you love her?" He snorted. "She's just a peasant from the countryside; I'm only fooling around with her. You have no idea how coarse her hands are—they disgust me whenever she touches me. How could I possibly fall for her?" I turned ashen at his words. He was Christopher, who was supposed to be wheelchair-bound. He was also supposed to be too broke for surgery. The peasant from the countryside he was talking about was me.

When we were about to head to the amusement park, my Beta boyfriend, Drew, brought along a woman and her daughter. There happened to be one seat short in the car. Drew told me to get out and give my seat to the two of them. “Laura has a kid with her. Let them go first. I’ll come back for you later,” he said. I calmly stepped out and watched as the car slowly pulled away from the pack. Three hours later, they arrived at the amusement park for the fireworks and feast. When a friend asked Drew why he still hadn’t come back to get me, Drew was patiently helping Laura light a giant firework. He wasn’t in a rush at all and even said, “It’ll be fine if I pick Sienna up later. She won’t mind. I’ll coax her a bit, and she’ll stop being mad.” Anger only worked on people who cared about someone. My dad, mom, and brother never cared, and now, not even Drew cared anymore. It was time for me to leave for good.

Disaster struck during my sophomore year.  Not only did my family fall into poverty, I ended up getting diagnosed with cancer as well. I was so broke that I only had a hundred dollars left to my name. Desperate for cash, I tried to pawn off the family amulet I had been wearing since I was a child. Unexpectedly, the storekeeper of the pawn shop took a glance before refusing it with a curt shake of his head. “This amulet is cursed. Whoever wears it is doomed to lead a short life. I can’t possibly take it.”
