The monster’s bright red eyes locked onto my blue ones. “Veronica . . .” it growled. It didn’t sound intimidating or frightening, though. It growled in a longing way like Veronica was the most important thing in the world to it. “I’m not Veronica,” I said with authority in my voice. I kept my shoulders and back straight, my chin high. With my powers, I was able to project my voice more than usual. “How do you know my mother’s name? Who are you?” The monster tossed its head to the side and huffed again. It took one step closer to me. With each step it took, my anxiety climbed higher.

“Who calls my name so boldly?” “So, you are her then? Yahaira?” Vera asked. “You called me by a name you weren’t sure I’d respond to?” the woman asked her. “The name is coming up a lot, and there’s always monsters involved. They even called your name,” Vera told her. The woman pulled a face. “Monsters.” “Yes, monsters. We don’t know where they come from, but there’s monsters everywhere. They’re fast, and they’re killing other species,” Vera explained.

I said, only a little sarcastic. “The only monsters in my house are you and me, and I can’t fit under your bed,” he said in a bland tone. “Har-har.” I mocked him. I didn’t want to think of myself as a monster, even if I was. “The most common in this particular city are Demons, Gargoyles, Vampires, and Witches. Werewolves do roam around here every now and then, but they like more open space for when they shift,” he continued like there had been no banter between us.

I needed to feed my monsters or there would be consequences. “Hi, handsome. Would you like some company?” I turned and saw an attractive blonde standing next to me. Perfect. I thought to myself. She wasn’t my usual but she would do. So I started my game again. Within thirty minutes she was walking out the door with me. We walked over to my car and I held the door as she climbed in. I smiled to myself as I climbed into the car and drove her to her death. This wasn’t how I wanted the night to end at least not with this woman but it would hold off my demons for now.

I muttered in agreement. He shook his head in disapproval. "No, detective. That was not what we meant. We mean to say, a real monster. The kind of monster who kills people and eats their organs and innards, drink their blood, or something like that," he suggested. I narrowed my eyes and glared at him incredulously. "So the killer would be a gremlin? Or perhaps, a goblin? How about a witch? A vampire or a wolfman? Was that what you and your team are trying to say?" I growled.

My eyes closing and sleep taking over me. Once again the faces of my past haunted my dreams. Only this time I could place each one by name. Mum, Dad, Lilith, Lucas, Darren, Lucifer, and the last face was the scariest of them all, the man who came for my mother. Lucien, my Uncle.
