His expression now held genuine concern, which oddly eased me a bit. "Are you always this cheerful?" I inquired, but he simply grinned and laughed it off. "I wish I could be carefree like you, just laughing..." I trailed off, taking a deep breath as I gazed at the can of drink in my hand. "Smiling, without worrying about the things happening around me," And just then I felt a sudden hush fall between us before he sighed, saying, "Sometimes, smiles are worn to hide the pain inside.”

She could barely think straight, her body wracked with pain. Groaning softly, Katie tried to focus on anything but the agony that consumed her. The weight of the past few hours—the fight with Garrett, the cruel words, the tension, and now this overwhelming pain—felt like too much. It was as if her body had betrayed her, holding onto the anguish that she couldn’t escape from. Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hall, faint but unmistakable. I’m suffocating but I cannot even voice it out. I have to manage, replays in my head, echoing through each ear as I force a smile onto my face. The clashing voices of the people around us resound like a terrible storm in my head, causing an unending pounding yet I bear it all. I just have to be pretty and smile without uttering a damn word. A false smile, but people don’t notice, my cheeks burn in pain at the permanent on slaughter of fakeness. I don’t talk to people. I smile. I smile until it’s too painful to keep it latched onto my face. I smile until tears streaming down that face. I smiled until I’m screamed at and kicked at by my fellow peers. But it’s okay. It’s always been okay.

Or perhaps we have grown accustomed to real pain by now. I won’t let them see any of it though, not even a slight discomfort. I have always refused to show them any pain or weakness whatsoever, and today won’t be any different. Nor will tomorrow be. In fact, I find myself smiling. Smiling that they will be together, instead of destroying an innocent person’s life.

“He’s been through hell and back.” Images flickered through my mind. Everything he had endured. Everything he had carried. Everything he had stood through without breaking. “He has been through enough,” I said, more firmly now. “So why can’t he reach it?” My essence looked at me for a long moment. And then— She smiled. Not amused. Not distant. Sad. “Sometimes,” she said gently, “our loved ones minimize their own success.” The words struck immediately. “They smile through their pain,” she continued, “and compare it to what the rest of the world suffers.”

Day after day, week after week, wondering what I did to deserve such a harsh punishment. I’ve learned that showing how much pain I’m in is useless. Everyone else moves on, leaving me behind in the darkness. No one wants to hang out with the “sad” girl who lost her parents. So, I do what I do best. I hide that pain, deep inside the cavern of my heart. I plaster a smile on my face, showing everyone that I’m still the happy girl who has all the love in the world in her heart. Even if I don’t believe it if others do that’s all that matters, right?
