My head bounced off the hard surface. Then I was out. And the nightmares began.

My mind wouldn't shut off. Wouldn't stop replaying everything. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw it all again. The gun pointing. The shot firing. Danny falling. The blood pooling. When I finally did fall asleep from pure exhaustion, the nightmares started immediately. In the first one, I was back at that compound. But this time, I didn't throw the knife fast enough. The man shot Danny again. And again. And again. Until he stopped moving entirely.

I cry out while I bang my head up against the door and think to myself what if this whole thing is either in my head or it is a nightmare. Hoping beyond all hopes, I look down at the phone again and then try to think back to what I was doing right before I was talking on the phone with my mother and listening to the radio when all this began.
