“Please? My friend Sarah had one at her sleepover and it was so fun!” Five pairs of eyes turn to me, pleading. I look at Sebastian. He raises an eyebrow like this is entirely my decision. “Fine,” I say, because anything that might tire them out faster is worth trying. “But we’re following all the fire safety rules and no one’s allowed to set themselves on fire.” The children cheer like I’ve just promised them Christmas. The campfire takes longer to set up than anticipated because I haven’t actually used the fire pit since River pointed it out last month and I have to remember where I put the firewood and figure out if the lighter fluid is still good.

Our friendship had stood the test of time and distance, and I knew it would continue to do so. The evening air grew cooler, and guests began to gather around the fire pit Alex had set up. The crackling flames cast a warm glow on everyone's faces, and the aroma of burning wood added to the night's enchantment. The log formation was facing each other and in the middle, there was a fire pit. “Hey, Soheila!” Hector shouted and pointed the empty log in front of him. “Sit here!” Soheila nodded and sat in front of Hector and Ezekiel. “I'll cook for us.” Soheila took out kitchen utensils for her to use and used the fire pit to cook. While cooking, Sirene and the five birds were chatting. “You have a good combat.” Hector complimented Sirene. Sirene smiled at him and said narcissistically “Of course! My four months staying in a forest was worth it.”

Then I dug around until I found what else I needed. After I found a wine opener… and some matches, I was ready. Instead of making a fire in the fireplace in the living room, I opted to use the outdoor fire pit. Hopefully there was still wood around here somewhere. It took me a few minutes but I found some. It was stacked on the side of the house. They really are keeping everything up here. Once I got the fire made and the wine poured in my glass I went back inside and felt up above the refrigerator.. what do you know … they’re still here.
