I press the letter to my chest and I feel the heart thump against the paper like a reply. "I don't know your name as I write this. I don't know your face. He clung to the tree he was leaning on for support, slowly lifted himself, and forced himself to stand. He was just about to step forward when he heard a familiar sound of a machine—a vehicle—that stopped and made him felt disturbed. Its accelerating engine could be heard from afar. His face lost its color for a moment like a wet painting being flushed away by water, his chest throbbed with fear, and he collapsed for the nth time because of the trembling of his knees. “Ever?” “Nope. Never.” “Come on, Susan. Don’t mess with me. No human is made of stone, or has a heart like that of stone. Well, unless terrorists. Wait. Those guys even have soft spots. They just seek to hide it.” Susan grinned. “Actually, I am made of stone. Carved from it actually. I have a heart of stone. And that’s when I love, I love to the fullest. Grief, loneliness… anger. “Gosh-!” I jumped in shock when a sudden static noise was heard from the speaker, indicating an aggressive pull of the guitar cable from the amplifier. I moved closer to the stage to take a peek, but I flinched again when I heard a grunt of frustration and heavy footsteps walking away. I covered my mouth and ran outside the hall in a hurry. God, did he hear me? Was I disturbing him? Is he the type to get annoyed when someone is observing them when they’re practicing? Damn, it wasn’t even intentional that I heard him play. It just so happens that I was in the hall!

“But you are also my greatest love.” His jaw tightened, his fingers pressing into her skin as if he couldn’t bear to let go. “I was afraid to love you,” she admitted, blinking against the moisture in her eyes. “Because loving you meant giving up. It meant putting my heart in your hands, knowing you could break it.” Her voice wavered, but she held his gaze, unwavering. “But I am standing here today because I chose you. I will always choose you.” The wind carried the words between them like a vow sealed by the universe itself.

Because if I speak it out loud, it becomes real. And I’m not ready for real. Not yet. But I can feel it coming for me—one heartbeat at a time.
