My fingers traced the spines of leather-bound books, all of them layered in dust that made my nose itch. "Focus," I muttered to myself. "One monster at a time." I immediately admonished myself. I continued to look until I found the books my dad had recommended. I pulled the four heavy volumes from the shelves. The History of Shadow Entities, The Blood Rites of the Unseen, The Search for Shadows and one volume of Pack Lore and Ancient Threats. I carried them to a secluded corner of the library. The dust felt suffocating, but I wouldn't let anything stop me.

The places Spencer stayed were seriously far away. I nodded, and we drove in silence for a few minutes before I decided to pull over to a deserted rest stop. "Let's take a break and look through these books, " I suggested, holding up the stack of dusty books we'd found in the school. Tia nodded, and we spent the next hour reading through the yellowed pages. A lot of them had to do with witchcraft, the anatomy and history of werewolves. My phone rang. I paused, exchanging looks with Tia.

I instantly held my breath, hoping they didn’t realize what that meant. But if they had, they said nothing. Instead, they just started flipping through the pages of the book, looking for which store to choose.

“That’s exactly what your grandmother used to say at your age.” I wandered farther between the narrow shelves mostly to escape the public humiliation, while Harmony disappeared toward the romance section making loud, dramatic noises about enemies-to-lovers tropes. The bookstore glowed softly beneath the low hanging lights while the snow drifted in thick waves outside the front windows facing Main Street. I paused near the folklore section automatically, my fingers tracing the bindings. Appalachian legends, mountain myths, and local history books lined the dark wood. One specific title caught my eye immediately: The Founding Families of Black Hollow.

THE NEXT STORY Sofia Friday. Finally, the week was finally over. It felt like it dragged on forever, leaving me craving a little indulgence. As I stepped into the library, book in hand, I inhaled the comforting scent of old pages mixed with a hint of citrus from the cleaning supplies. A smile crept onto my face as I adjusted my grip on the novel, its cover barely hiding the kind of story that made my heart race.

"Vampires aren't necessarily classified as fairy tales" I corrected him. "You could say so. I mean they're different, strange, and strong. They ain't human"

WITH ONLY one day left to Halloween, the people of Cape Cod were already setting into the mood of the Oktoberfest event.
