Staring At The Ceiling In The Dark Novels & Stories

I am amazed at the way he is still behaving and not just growling. I gaze at the ceiling, tracing the beautifully intricate pattern on the white ceiling. His room is a hue of grey and black, screaming his personality. My eyes become heavy and soon I slip into oblivion.

That's enough for tonight. I leaned my head back against the back of the couch, staring blankly at the ceiling. The living room lights dimmed, casting soft shadows on the walls. The ticking of the clock was audible, as if reminding me that time was ticking, even though I was still trapped in the same whirlpool of thoughts.

I sent a silent prayer up to Selene to keep them safe. The lights in the room dimmed, leaving two spotlights aimed at the ceiling. A large cage was lowered onto the stage that was not too far away from us. The lights were completely cut off before they all turned back on so that we could get the perfect view of the Celestials inside the cage.

Then I frowned, because I realized that I would have to stand up to switch off the lights, as I didn't quite appreciate sleeping with the lights on. Letting out a tired groan, I rose up from the bed like a zombie and went ahead to switch off all the lights. Then I returned to lie down on the bed, with my gaze focused on the ceiling because it was beautiful. With the lights switched off, there was something like a tiny thousand white stars shining up there on the ceiling. I did not know how they did it, but whenever I looked up at it, I kept on saying to myself that it was money well spent.

Ann couldn’t sleep a wink that night. The apartment was silent except for the hum of the old fridge in the corner, but in her mind, chaos raged. She lay rigid in bed, eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling as if it might answer her unspoken questions. She’d closed the curtains tight—no moonlight to guide her, just blackness—but that only made her thoughts swirl more fiercely.

Liana's POV I stared at the ceiling above me, my eyes counting the beams that held the place up. I wasn't sure the exact moment I stared counting, but I'd counted over ten thousand beams, and I wasn't exaggerating. The lights weren't left out either. I had counted how many times the lights had flickered on and off, and the interval between them too. Yes, I knew I sounded crazy, but I wasn't. There was a reason I was in a normal hospital and not a psych ward. I was simply bored, and it was killing me.

"Well, Rhodes." "..." "Are you sleeping?" "Yes. It's late, go to sleep." "Uhmm..." "What?" Celeste grabbed onto the blanket and uttered attentively, "Well, can I turn on the lights?" "No." "But..." Looking around as she could see only darkness, Celeste hugged the blanket tightly. "I... Actually, I feel uncomfortable in unknown places so... I mean if it's too dark then I... I can't sleep. So, can I turn it on? I will only turn this side's light on."

CELESTE POV "Where am I?" My eyes opened slowly to the bright light in the room, and I instantly regretted it as the light blinded me. Wincing, I allowed them to be closed for a brief minute before opening them once again. Despite the brightness, my eyes got accustomed to it quickly. I attempted to turn to my side to access my environment, but I could only see a white ceiling and a chandelier from which the bright light was coming. But it was impossible to turn. It felt like I was strapped to the place I was on. I could barely move my neck, much less the other part of my body. Also, the blinding headache and the tingling in my neck made it even worse.

The room is gray except for the ceiling which is one big light. I sit on the floor and close my eyes. I listen for the any sound. Any clue as to what they expect of me. I open my eyes and look at the walls. They seem seamless, but that’s impossible unless they built this 10x10 room around me. I got in somehow. Then I realize the ceiling isn’t a light, it’s sunlight. It’s also 15 ft above me. I go back to the middle and sit for a while and listen. I’m my strongest right now. It’s only 15 feet. If I use the wall to push off I might be able to break it. I take a few deep breathes before I try.

I touch all over the walls, try removing the floorboard piece, everything, but can't find one ounce of a secret compartment. The elevator dings and when I look at the down and up arrows, I see the down arrow lit up. Someone is getting on the elevator from downstairs. I look frantically and hope I can locate what I need soon. I'm not sure how much longer I can last in here. Lower and lower the elevator falls and that's when it hits me. I look up and see mirrors upon mirrors. My reflection looks that of fear. "Look at yourself when you feel like you can't go on anymore Belle. Find the bravery within."
