Replaced by His First Love
Faint orange light bled through the cracks in the asphalt, and the air began to shimmer.
I slumped back, my hand trembling as the silver light faded. My skin felt raw, seared by the intensity of the connection.
A small hand, thin as a bird’s claw, reached out and touched the traces of silver lingering on my wrist. I looked up. A boy, no older than seven, stood over me.
His hair was a mess of dirt and tangles, but beneath the grime, I saw unmistakable threads of gold—the sovereign gold of the Blackwood line. He didn't look at my face. He looked at my stomach, then back at the Mercury Lines.
