For a moment, the silence pressed on my chest, and I looked around for a way out of this place. Then I heard him. Alpha Dominic Salvatore, standing by the window, his back to me. The moonlight caught the edges of his frame, broad shoulders, tense posture, veins flexing down his arms. “You should have knelt,” he said, voice sharp as the blade at his hip. “Even the idea of you speaking back the way you did should have gotten you killed.” “Then why didn’t it?” I asked, testing him. “I wouldn’t have minded. I would have been free of all this.”

Salvatore. I pushed the thought away immediately, he’s bounded by Omertà. He has been with me for years, through blood, through Diego. He wouldn’t, it can’t be one of the men. Salvatore Bianchi, Mikhail Reznikov, Kaia Morelo and Veleno Caruso were sworn to Omertà, they have already earned their place in blood. My phone buzzed suddenly, it was an unknown number. Private and untraceable. The room went silent, I answered without hesitation.

And then Salvatore De Luca stepped out, adjusting the cuffs of his suit with casual malice, like he owned the fucking ground he stood on. The late evening sun caught the edge of his smile, sharp, poisonous. I hated him. I hated his guts. I hadn’t seen him since our fight and he seemed to have cleaned up nicely. I felt an old, cold rage settling over me, wrapping around my spine like armor. Salvatore wasn’t just after turf. He was after her. I stepped forward into the dying light, letting him see exactly how unimpressed I was. Salvatore spread his hands wide, mock-friendly. “Don Moretti,” he called out, voice smooth as oil. “Always a pleasure.”

I do think she's somehow connected to them, or she owes them money.” Stefano nods and turns his eyes to one of the strippers upstage. "If you will excuse me, it's been a long day, and I need to blow off some steam." He smirks as he walks away from me to the stripper. Man, he is going to get into trouble one of these days sleeping with the strippers.

Christian has his back to me, but I see the spread of a smile from the back of his head with the way his cheeks curve upward. “Basta! Who raised you, foolish boys?” Salvatore’s voice is a few octaves higher than it was at the store, which makes me wonder if his outburst is real or a performance. I mean, as a performer myself, I feel he’s a kindred spirit. However, there’s no way to know, so I refocus my attention on what’s going on, praying that Salvatore keeps speaking loud enough for me to hear even from over here. The four men hang their heads low, with their hands behind them, not daring to look up. My stomach twists and a certain sense of foreboding engulfs me.

Well I don't want to go in that lane as I have nothing to do with their family issues nor I have a right to poke my nose in what that doesn't concern me. “I didn’t hear you.” He didn’t respond. His gaze remained fixed on her. “I’m Liz,” she added hesitantly. “Are you… a relative of Damien’s?” He studied her for a long moment. Then he spoke. “Are you the new lover my father is keeping?” Her stomach dropped. Okay, what was she supposed to say to that? “I—no,” she said quickly. “I’m his stepdaughter.” The Vampire cut her off with a sharp laugh that ended with a scoff. He began circling her slowly, like she was something to inspect. Liz felt her most uncomfortable at this very moment.

And just as the last plate was set, the back door slammed open. All of us froze because it was Salvatore and Elio, and they were covered in blood, not just splatters, but streaks and stains on their faces and suits. But the most shocking thing was that Salvatore was laughing. Isabella stepped forward, her face draining of color, “Sal, oh my God, are you okay? What happened?” Salvatore strode right toward her, eyes burning with adrenaline. He looked wild, dangerous, and completely alive, “Okay?” he practically shouted and the next moment, he grabbed her face roughly and kissed her hard, “I’m fucking ecstatic! We took the South Loop back!”
