For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I smiled, calm and polite, the way men like me were trained to.
“Mr. Clarke,” I said evenly, offering a hand. “I don’t believe we’ve met.”
He looked up at me, sunlight glinting in his eyes. For a heartbeat, they seemed… lighter, gold almost, before returning to their usual shade of brown.
His mouth curled into a polite smile as he stood, gripping my hand.
“Professor King,” he greeted smoothly, his voice rich with confidence. “I’ve heard so much about the great Stephan King.”
