It felt good—light, like a breath of fresh air in this park where the wind rustled the leaves around us. We sat on the bench after that, side by side, our shoulders almost touching. But I laughed anyway, hard and genuine, because the real joke was how bad they were, how he delivered them with that straight face like he thought they were gold. They slipped into conversation easily, like they always did. Matt talked about random things, things that didn’t really matter but somehow felt important just because it was him saying them. At some point, Matt made a joke that caught Jordy off guard. Jordy laughed, a real one this time, dropping his head slightly. “You’re actually so stupid.”

“Oh, Trisha just told the funniest joke.” Fiona raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. “A joke? From Trisha? This I’ve gotta hear.” “Oh, don’t worry, you’ll get it,” Trisha said, still grinning. “Alright, here goes. Why don’t skeletons fight each other?” Fiona blinked, trying to think. “I dunno. Why?” “Because they don’t have the guts!” Trisha finished with a flourish, proud of herself. Kathryn cracked up again, and Fiona couldn’t help but join in, shaking her head. “Alright, alright, that’s bad, but it’s funny. You should be a stand-up comedian, Trisha.”

He grins. “One moment they are ‘fuck you youngest child’ and in the next they want us to produce the next population of the country. It’s like ‘make up your mind will ya? Are we important or not?’”, He continues joking, eyes lighting up when he hears me chuckle a second time. “Yeah, literally”, I agree, having to lower my eyes. I feel far too ashamed. I not only chuckled at one of his jokes, but at two of them. And I did so because I actually found them funny.

She barely laughed at his jokes. “What’s funny?”
