I did not yell, I did not cry, and I did not try to follow the terrified maid. My two days of consideration had just ended, and a new, terrible suspicion was taking root. I would wait, cold and motionless, until Atticus returned. I would have my clarification, or I would have my final farewell.

He starts to reach for my gloved finger, but I move faster, taking a pin from my dress and aiming for his neck. He catches my wrist, laughing, and he takes the pin, tossing it toward the wall behind me. A sharp cry catches my attention and I see that it has been buried into my maid’s shoulder. Even the musicians have stopped playing. My eyes widen, and I start to ask her if she is alright, but Atticus grabs my chin, forcing my gaze back to him. “Do not play these games with me, dove. I don’t like them very much. There’s a maid for every act of defiance you put up, and from what I have seen, you’re the kind to care for their mortal lives.”

Atticus is both confused and surprised at all the dead bodies he passes. “What the hell happened here,” He mumbles as he turns left down the next hall. Atticus follows the beacon of his people down the stairs. When he reaches the bottom, he looks right but doesn't feel them. He looks left and sees a short hall with a large steel door. He feels them—all of them—and they're on the other side of that door. Atticus approaches the door, places his hands on the door, and closes his eyes, feeling for them. Yes, they're definitely on the other side of this door.

I let out a heavy sigh as I left my room together with the maid who keeps on cursing me for being dirty and ugly. Damn. They treated me like a dog in this family. END OF CHAPTER 2
