"We don't have a refrigerator. We can only do this to preserve food." Uri memorized everything Finn taught him; survival knowledge like this is essential. Day after day, Clement did not come, making Uri extremely impatient. But the wooden house was the rendezvous point. He did not dare to go anywhere and could only wait patiently. Fortunately, with Finn by his side, life is less tedious and feels safer. On the eighth night, a flashlight glimmered in the woods, approaching the wooden house. Finn was the first to notice footsteps in the distance, nervously pulling Uri out of the house and jumping onto a hidden tree branch.

A man even slammed his club into a girl’s jaw and once she was down and sobbing loudly, he heartlessly played his game, passed, and hurried back into his pod. The timer beeped red, crows attacked, the blade came and blood splashed. It was soon a warzone of survival. People suddenly wanted to walk out alive. Cold sweats ran down my spine. “Pod twenty, step forward” And finally…the dice rolled to me.

It was to survive. To be continued....

Tomorrow, someone would fall. I could feel it. The spark. The fracture. The flames that would test everything. And I would have to stand in it. Watch. Decide. Navigate. No longer observation. "Turn the speakers back on. Move a little. You'll heat up." Felix brightened right up. He hit the power again. The DJ music blasted back—rough, weaker, laced with static. No one cared. They started moving again. We were getting close to the mountain road. My chest tightened. My palms got slick. Night dropped fast. Snow started falling. Then— A sharp crackle. The music died. Every light on the dash blinked out. The car jerked—then stopped cold. Total darkness swallowed the cabin. "Ah!"

Gavin and I had been married for almost a year, but he always treated me rudely. I looked at the door, still closed as before. Maybe tonight Gavin would come home late as usual. The water on my face turned sad at the thought of the fact that tonight would pass in vain. Okay, I'm okay. Everything will be fine. Even tonight will probably be the same as the previous night; you don't have to be sad. I tried to strengthen myself. Fifteen minutes passed; I turned off the light and decided to sleep on the bed after the room lights were turned off. The 7X9 room was completely dark, apart from a little light source from the window vent.

But alive. And for the first time since the first gunshot rang out, I believed we might survive this night.

Then said something that didn’t sound like comfort at all. “It’s going to get worse.” Hope swallowed hard. “I figured.” The creature stepped forward. And the night stopped pretending it was normal. The fracture in the sky pulsed again. Louder. Closer. Like it was breathing.And somewhere in the impossible space between one heartbeat and the next.
