The closest wolf, a young male I'd killed during the rescue mission, stepped forward. His eyes weren't angry. They were sad.

Another wolf moved closer, an older female whose throat I'd torn out at the Blackwood border. "You forgot something important, Maya. In your quest to become strong enough to survive, you forgot you were human first."
