“Come on. One more stall. Then we’ll head back.”
I nodded, forcing a smile as she pulled me toward a stand of candied fruits.
“Two of the honey ones,” Maddie said, passing a coin to the vendor. “And make them the big ones. My friend here needs the world’s biggest sugar rush.”
I rolled my eyes but accepted the sticky treat when she handed it over. “If I go into a coma, I’m haunting you.”
“Please do. The shop could use the publicity,” Maddie quipped.
We laughed again, but the sound barely lingered before the wind shifted—cooler, sharper, carrying something uneasy. A shout echoed somewhere behind the stalls. Not loud, but strained.
