My body had frozen instantly when I heard it, my wolf shrinking back in fear. I lifted my eyes to River, studying his face carefully. “Is she… your mate?” I asked quietly. River’s reaction was immediate. “What? No!” he almost shouted, his eyes widening in shock. His head shook so quickly his dark hair fell into his eyes. “She can’t be my mate. Please… no.” The intensity in his voice made my brows crease in confusion. “But… she’s an Alpha,” I said slowly. “Why is she a rogue?” River sighed deeply and leaned back against the wall, crossing his arms over his chest. His jaw tightened as if the memory carried weight.

His eyes swept over me again, slower this time. It wasn’t studying….it was measuring. Calculating. “She has no scent,” River added. “Not wolf. Not human. “I want to know every person he speaks to, every move he makes, every breath he takes until that hearing.” My voice dropped, cold and precise. “If he so much as sneezes—” I tilted my head slightly, “—I want a report.” Silence stretched for half a second. Then Alpha Rain’s mouth curved, something sharp and approving settling into his expression. “Consider it done.” Then I looked at River, who had returned from the woods. His human skin was covered in dirt and blood—not his own. His eyes were still burning with the promise of murder, his wolf barely leashed beneath the surface.

And an arm was wrapped around her by a man who is clearly his mate, and he is also Alpha. Next to them was a boy who was like a teenager's kid and was also an Alpha. He was holding hands with a pretty lady with brown, shaggy hair and glasses. She was a beta. He saw the four of them make their way towards a table. Alex looked over at Ash and grabbed his hand gently as he led them to the table his siblings were at with their drinks in their free hands.
