I move to the sliding door that opens to the patio. Stepping outside, I can hear the howls of my warriors as they fight the rogues that have dared to enter our territory. Had they needed my help, I would have heard by now, but I cannot help but want to be there. I am the Alpha of my Pack, and my place is at the front line. As I turned to go and tell Kristine I was leaving, I heard from my Beta.

Most of the time, I just lay there with my ears raised, listening. For footsteps. For claws scraping bark. For voices that didn’t belong in my woods. I didn’t talk to anyone. I didn’t dare. But I listened to everything. I listened to lone wolves moving through the deep woods, muttering to themselves. I listened to the few travelers who still used the old paths, their words drifting like smoke on the breeze. Piece by piece, the story started to make sense. Alpha Dawn’s pack had grown huge. They claimed more and more land each season. Anyone who spoke against them disappeared. And Dawn himself… people said he never got sick or hurt. Scars that should have killed him vanished overnight.

Damien stood slowly and crossed to the railing, leaning against it, staring into the woods. “You can rest now,” he said without looking at her. “You don’t need to keep fighting every minute. You’re safe here. For as long as you need.” Her throat tightened. “And what if Margaret disagrees?” He finally turned, and the moonlight made his eyes look almost gold. “I am the Alpha,” he said. “Even she will fall in line.” His voice was low but absolute. There was no room for argument. Ryleigh stood, unsure what she was doing, but compelled by some invisible pull. She walked to the railing beside him, close enough to feel the heat of his body.

She walked with her head high and a stable heart rate which was interesting considering that she was a prisoner surrounded by at least ten strangers. Her curly hair covered all the way down her back. I dismissed them before walking over to my bar to pour a glass of Scotch for Cash and me. I had a feeling we were going to need it for the conversation we were about to have.

He commanded the man driving. "But-" Beta Victor started his protest. "-Go! Now!" Alpha River yelled the command at him. I need running footsteps from where I lowered my bead. Then, the other man began to race the car through the woods while trying not to hit anything that would jeopardize our escape. I looked up from where I was hiding and looked behind me. I saw Alpha River swiping at one of the wolves with his claws while the other one tried to get hold of him. "Will he be... okay?" I gulped out, feeling goosebumps all over my hands.
