Lucian smiled, a wide, brilliant grin that made my chest fly with pure delight as he bounced in my grip, screaming his victory for the entire world to hear.
A shaking, painful smile breaks me from the memory as I clench my fingers into the grass, praying for the Goddess to bring that exact smile back to me. To bring that light back to him, too, and to make everything as bright as it once was.
“Mom! It hurts!” Lucian screamed as he writhed violently on the floor, his bones cracking and casting him into a display of pure, unadulterated agony that I was forced to watch from a distance. “Mom, please! Make it stop!”
