The elders’ gazes turned cold and judgmental toward Hilary, and servants whispered behind her back, pointing fingers whenever she passed.
Furious, Hilary smashed countless pieces of fine porcelain across the estate halls, screaming through her tears. She begged James to defend her name, to clear the lies, but he merely sighed and said with irritation, “If you’re innocent, you don’t have to fear what they say in the shadows. Give it time. It’ll fade.”
