The crazy eyed look she had was making me uncomfortable. “I think there is a misunderstanding here,” I started. “I don’t need anyone to serve me.” “Well, of course not,” she started, “But as far as we know, you are the last Shifter. The Zytechions pledge to follow you. You are our leader.” My head hurts. This took a turn and I wasn’t sure if that was for the better. “Shouldn’t that be like a family thing… or something?” She chuckled at my panic.

His smile turned to one of concern and his face became serious. “What do you mean? You said you never got the shifting gene, so you can’t be seventeen.” My eyes widened at his words. That wasn’t what we were told in school. My voice started to come out shaky as thoughts began racing through my mind. “What are you talking about? That’s basic shifting. We learn that as children when we start school. If a Shifter has not transformed by their sixteenth birthday, then it means the shifting gene is absent, and they were cursed to live as humans.

"It makes no sense. I'm better then that gay any day. Being a homo should have made him more of a sissy ya know? Kind of like you, but...." Brandon did some growling of his own, cutting the obnoxious Shifter off midsentence. "Shut up Lander." he said. The smell of blood tickled his nose again, making his hands twitch. He balled them into tight fists. He didn't pay attention to the energy swirling, pushing his passions and emotions into overdrive. The flame slowly leaking out into his soul and his mind....making him reckless as his sickness was replaced by heat...and unending strength.

Would I have had a kinder childhood? Would she have loved me like a daughter, treated me better than David? Maybe I was why she had left in the first place. This time it was placed in a far flung corner of the library. It must’ve been fate because I managed to find it. However, it doesn’t seem to be doing much. I’ve been sitting here for an hour and nothing has changed. The book details the nature of shifting. A complex history and how it translates into modern times now that we coexist with humans. The later chapters detail the biology behind it and how someone can shift properly. There have been cases of teens not being able to shift. It’s nothing new. Some hormonal imbalance that sorts itself out. Unfortunately, I’m old enough for my body to figure it all out but it hasn’t.

I confess to the beautiful Elizabeth. She looks at me silently contemplating what I am about to show her. I take a deep breath. "The last one?" she asks full of longing. I growl. "Please don't run away because of what you are about to see" I plead with her as I induce my body to the force of the transformation. My bones break and fur starts to come out of my skin, I growl as I feel all the pain coursing through me, the sound of my bones breaking echoing in the place where previously animals were singing.
