“Me.” She answers, as her voice echoes in that empty library floor, worst with the flickering light that is suggesting a nightmare to come. Just then that faint sound of the clock can be heard from afar, and the sound of a hustling cold wind from the conditioner is somewhat whispering a dreaded call. She glances beside and reads the time as it struck. “9:00 pm.”

All I can hear is a ticking clock, but I don’t know where it is coming from. “Midnight is coming,” a voice whispers. “Run while you can.” She asks if I can hear that, but I’m not sure what to tell her. “I can, but where is it coming from? We are on a bridge in the middle of the woods.” Valeria holds me tighter. “Kendric, we have to find out what midnight means. There’s something behind it.” I wake with a jolt, unsure of what in the world just happened. Valeria stirs by my side, her eyes wide with panic. “Kendric, were you dreaming again? You mumbled something about midnight and were shouting my name at one point. What was it?”

When I opened the door, a blast of cold air hit me like a wave. It reminded me of that scary time after a really tough delivery, when I was shivering and truly thought that I might not make it. Matthew Smith's voice came from behind me, sounding totally surprised. "Shirley? It's freezing out there. Come on in!" He did not even seem to care that I was sporting a six-month old baby bump. He pushed me aside roughly, but he was super gentle with the person he was bringing inside.

He smiled. After a long shower I head to bed in Liam’s room. He is still on the couch reading a book. Its not long before I am settled under the covers that I feel Liam lay down beside me. I don’t want to talk so I pretend to be asleep, within minutes he is snoring. *** I wake up to the moon shinning bright on my face. I don’t hear Liam snoring. I feel beside me and he is gone. I hear his footsteps heading down the hall and the front door creak open and then shut.

My heart hammered as I opened the door and stepped into the empty corridor. Silence swallowed everything.
