The Rip
The world simplified: hand, hand, kick, hail of bubbles, turn.
On the far wall, a rattle sounded above the tiles—just the building exhaling, she told herself. Pipes expand; metal complains. She rolled into backstroke for variety, eyes on the ribbed ductwork and beams overhead. A pipe ran the length of the ceiling, jacketed in peeling insulation. It had a bulge where plaster met old copper, a belly where there shouldn’t be one.
