His prolonged silence thumped my heart as if it challenged me to correct the mistake I made unintentionally. However, I had no idea what I did wrong. So, taking a safer route, I closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep. That was when Cassian finally broke his silence. He grabbed my wrist, catching me off guard. “No!” he said, his voice rough. “You can’t ignore me like this.” My heart leapt to my throat as my eyes flew open, only to find shadows of darkness clouding Cassian’s features. "We're as safe as anyone else," Silas said, though his eyes drifted to the small, flickering television in the corner.

The room was silent. Too silent. Maybe… that was what bothered me. I wasn’t used to silence. Much less to tranquility. And in that house, silence never meant peace. It meant something was about to happen. I closed the book slowly, frustrated. Not a single line. Not a single word. My throat felt dry. I looked at the pitcher beside the bed. Empty. With each bullet, his mind drifted back to the girl laying still in his room. Especially her damn smile that kept haunting him. He was now very sure that her every smile held a pinch of poison. Two damn weeks without looking in to her beautiful sea eyes, two damn weeks without seeing her smile.

I joked as I motioned to the couple in the photo. Sierra giggled and nodded at me. The hush that followed was deafening. We're not talking to each other; we're just staring at nothing while experiencing each other's presence. However, the quiet is unexpectedly not uncomfortable, as I have previously shared with many people, strangers or not. This silence with Sierra is soothing and relaxing.
