I gathered more energy to take them out one by one. “Stand down!” Their leader in the cowboy hat stalked through the door, gazing at the scene. “This is what happens when you disrespect the white wolf. She is a gift. We are winning our war because of her powers. The scales are finally tipped in our favor...” What? The energy moved out of me into a storm—a small storm with gale-force winds that knocked the hunters into one another. The leader knelt in front of my cage, mumbling some prayer. Others followed his lead. These men were getting crazier and crazier.

Or somebody. And it halted. It found what it was looking for. In a swift movement, it moved towards White Wolf. Crescent Leaf shuddered and screamed but she was reluctant to even touch her own daughter. White Wolf was enveloped with the mysterious blue fire, but it did not burn her or caused her blisters. Slowly, she was lifted above the ground and everyone was staring at her. No on spoke. Not even her brothers. White Wolf began to speak. Her voice was different. It was of an older woman and when she opened her eyes, they were bright white.

But she couldn’t explain it away, not when she looked at his mouth from which two teeth were protruding now. No, not teeth. Fangs! Pointy, sharp fangs like those of an animal. Like a Sabertooth tiger. She couldn’t think it, no, because to think it made it real. It couldn’t be real. It didn’t exist. He didn’t exist, not like that.

I nodded slowly, staring at the spot where Cameron’s figure had disappeared into the trees. "I'm fine," I whispered. But as I looked up at the high, jagged cliffs that ringed the valley, my blood went cold. High above us, standing on a ledge of white stone, a flash of silver fur caught the moonlight. The wolf was massive, its eyes glowing with a cold, calculating intelligence. It wasn't a scout. It wasn't a scavenger. It wasn't a Crescent Moon wolf. It was a Silver Fang. And it was watching us with the eyes of a hunter who had just found his prize.

My father chose to train in this area, allowing us to practise in peace without being concerned about anyone finding out that I am special. We were stunned to see another white wolf coming toward us. White wolves were rare, and seeing another white wolf was even rarer. I ran towards the little white wolf with emerald eyes, eager to make a friend. My father’s wolf caught me by the scruff of my neck and set me aside. My wolf, Jenna, whined at my father’s wolf, who ignored her and returned to face the problem we were stuck in. Another wolf was with the white wolf, but something about their scents felt familiar.

Thousands of shadows moved soundlessly amongst the black trunks, across tree limbs and through the yellow leaves of the Yellow Leaf forest. no sounds were made or a single yellow leaf was disturbed on the ground, although several thousand mages in full armor were trotting through at full speed. Leaving not even a footprint was left behind.

******** The darkness spread further when Liam, brimming with anger and control, stamped across the heavy woods at the head of his pack of warriors. "When we get there," he yelled, "leave no one standing. I want the White Fang pack wiped out." The men eyed each other warily, but followed him in silence. For one thing, Liam had a very short fuse, and no one argued over his orders. He lifted a hand as they approached the pack house and the group froze where they stood, ceasing their noise entirely. He watched the house nervously, his eyes sharp as he examined it. Something was off. "Where are the guards?" he growled, the menace low.

Then, Susy made a move to get closer to me and my kids, which prompted me to stand up with them on top of me and growl at her. Fabian questioned the person by asking, "Who are you, and what are you doing on my lands?" Without saying a word, I started to let my fur change color to its natural snow-white tint, and as soon as it did, everybody started looking at me in an adorable way. I looked at Fabian as he took Susy's hand and started to walk towards me. He had not seen a white wolf for a very long time, and the last time they had seen one was a very long time ago.
