I let out a small laugh, and I nod at his words. “Okay, go on.” He started talking but it was as if he was muted, and everything around us was muted too. I tried to speak but nothing came out. It felt like an earthquake happening around me, and it only felt stronger and stronger as the seconds went by, yet everyone looked like they didn’t notice. How could they not notice? My vision got super blurry to the point I couldn't see anything but brightness, from what I was assuming was coming from the sun. “Lara”

I avoided talking about Gemma tactfully because it always created a clash between my mum and me due to difference of opinion. Our car smoothly sped on the flat highway. I glanced out of the window and saw the orange melting into the blue sky. The faint cry of gulls and the sound of little gusts of wind rattling the car sent a mellow ripple through the quiet evening. As we drew near the main streets of the next town, we saw small heads with bronze arms and spindly legs frolicking on the pavement- their mindless mothers occupied in nugatory tittle-tattle.

She grabbed the map and got serious for a moment, “But I expect you to return the map and my blob companion when you’re finished.” I nodded with a smile, “No worry Rachelle. You will get it all back before we leave. But what is a blob?” She laughed again, “Oh sweetheart, we have some cool buddies in the underworld!” She turned around, reaching for the orange slime ball on the table and picking it up. With this ball in her hands, she faced me. “This is Pal,” and the moment she said Pal, its eyes appeared. The ball was in fact a living creature. “He is my Blabudy!” The creature blinked at me and I stood in shock, trying to figure out what on earth was going on.

My vision blurred, the world slipping away as I succumbed to the ominous embrace of unconsciousness. I am sorry, Nic and Enzo. I really am.

Suddenly, a deafening roar split the sky. Several armed police helicopters thundered overhead. Their blinding white searchlights enveloped the highway, lighting up the darkness like it was broad daylight.

I spit in his direction and walk off. I may have won this little skirmish, but something is wrong. My sight is blurry, and my body feels weak. I take a few more steps, and the sound of cheering is becoming muffled. It almost sounds like I’m under water, and I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

People cheered, pointed at the sky, and praised what they believed was a blessing. Amid the chaos, the system spoke again, calm and emotionless. [World destruction sequence initiated.]

It coated every inch of my being and I found myself leaning dangerously close to him, instead of pulling away. “Why are you leaning so close to me?” He blurted and my eyes widened, immediately realizing that the hell I was doing. I jumped away from him, clearly my throat awkwardly as I lied, “I was just testing how blind you are. Apparently, not blind enough.” “Ouch!” He chuckled. “I'm not sure if that is an insult or not. I am blind in the sense that my vision is blurred out sometimes. I can see things to an extent depending on the lighting. I can see movements, colours, just the blurred version. Same with people.”

I yawned, my eyelids growing heavy as exhaustion finally won and sleep pulled me under. ____ “Lyra, baby, come,” a woman’s voice called out gently. I strained my eyes, trying to see who it was, but the entire world around me was a hazy blur. “Lyra,” the voice echoed again from the distance. I spun around, desperately trying to catch a glimpse of the speaker's face, but features remained entirely blur . I could swear I heard a womans voice. Who could it be? I thought, my heart hammering as I chased the sound across a vast, endless white field.

Clara I opened my eyes to a ceiling the color of watered milk. For a long moment, I didn't understand what I was looking at. The light above me hummed softly, a thin fluorescent buzz that seemed to drill straight into my skull. I tried to blink it away, but my eyelids felt heavy, as if someone had stitched small weights into them. The world swam in and out of focus, blurring at the edges like wet paint. Where am I? The thought came slowly, as though it had to push through layers of cotton.
