She’d been through enough and what she needed was rest, not probing from a stranger or interrogative questions coming from a man she didn’t even know. Men did this to her. Fingers reached around the loaded double barrel, sitting beside the couch. I huffed in silent fury... issuing a silent promise as I gripped my gun. So, there were werewolves… people that shifted out in the thick of the forest. Is that what I was only now realizing? Were there unicorns too? I snickered stupidly to myself. My thoughts trailed back to her eyes. Those startling lilac eyes. I pictured her face as sleep took hold. An odd sensation rumbled in my chest, a warmth I hadn't felt in a long time.

The woods past the Hollow were silent — too silent. No birds. No wind. Just the crunch of their booted feet on dew-drenched leaves. Even that seemed too loud, as if sound had weight now. The way the Hollow still held on to their skin.

The tree stood like a sentinel in the clearing, gnarled and silent, its bark cracked open with time and secrecy. Emilia approached it as if called—no footsteps, no thoughts, just instinct leading her through the brush, leaves hushing under her bare feet. The woods whispered, breathless with anticipation.

The silence pressed down on me so hard it made my ears ring. Even the leaves had gone still, like the trees themselves were holding their breath. A cold shiver raced down my spine. My aunt’s warnings came rushing back, her voice echoing in my head. Don’t go to the woods at night. Not alone. They’ll find you if you do.

Winter snapped almost causing my left ear to go deaf. “I’m sorry sir” he said softly with his head faced down. “YOU ARE A DISAPPOINTMENT NOTHING MORE!” he yelled. “I wonder how Mr. Haze would think if he saw you right now.” I felt something wetting my hand as I slowly took a glance at my hand which was on the table just beneath Sorrows head. Tears had covered it and I knew they came from Sorrow. “Everyone you can go home” Mr. Winter quickly said. We all started packing our books and heading out.

“Then we move at first light. Faster now. They know we’re coming.” Far off among the shadowed branches, that was where Maelis went quiet. The shapes of the woods swallowed movement. Not a sound followed after. Stillness took over like it always does when someone leaves too fast. Between one breath and the next gone. A sound came from far away low at first, then rising. The cry stretched out, thin and sharp. It hung in the air like smoke before silence pulled it under. Fires beneath my skin stirred awake. Hot. Patient.

He demanded indignantly. Josh slowly reached to his back pocket and pulled out the wallet. Then he held out both wallets to the man, who slowly came up to him and, at the moment when he reached for it, Josh dropped them and pounced on the stranger. This screamed in rage, they wrestled briefly on the floor and then a shot was released. Suddenly it was quiet in the forest. The thief moved and ran back into the woods without looking.
