His eyes moved over Damien first, then Daniel, then Marcus, and then they settled on me and stayed.
"Sera," he said warmly. "You look well."
The way he said it made my stomach turn.
I had heard that warmth my whole life. I had believed it my whole life. Standing here now on the outside of it, looking at it from a place where I finally understood what it was built on, it felt like touching something that looked solid and finding nothing underneath.
"Roland," I said.
He looked at Damien with something that was almost admiration. "I have to say, Damien, waking up was not part of the plan. That was genuinely unexpected." He tilted his head slightly. "You are harder to kill than most."
