Trevor turned to see twin green orbs hovering a few feet away from him. “Barker?” he whispered to the sickly gloom. A terrible chuckle came back at him from the darkness. Trevor shivered with fear as he took an instinctive step backwards, and found the Comms desk blocking his way. The chuckle came again, thick and wet. Trevor could feel cold breath on his cheek, and a rancid stench of sour milk made him gag. I guess you did look at the dairy cart after all, he thought. His trembling fingers found his cell phone, forcing his arm to lift the tiny device as his jittering thumb activated the torch. The beam cast its light into the face of the thing standing mere feet away.

“Someone was there at the funeral who shouldn’t have been.” I opened it. Photos. A man in black, face half-covered by a mask, but his stance—his build—was military. Professional. “Recognize him?” Trevor asked. “No,” I said, frowning. I exhaled slowly, flipping to the next page. “Can you trace him?” “I can try. But if he’s who I think he is, he’s ex-military, maybe hired muscle. It won’t be easy.” “Do it anyway.” Trevor nodded. “You got it.”

I walk into the kitchen and drop my bag on the island with a bang. I walk to the fridge and take out a water bottle. Today felt like a battle. I can’t believe Trevor came at me like that.
