If it was a normal person, I'm sure that his hand would have been pierced due to the heat. But I know that it is not affected by the fire. He's a Basilisk and fire could not kill him, nor harm him. I knew we couldn't erase the abuse they'd endured, but I'd be damned if we let it continue. King Cian raised both arms, an arc of fire dancing between his palms. "We will burn the rot from this place." He flung his hands forward, the fire rolling from them in a wave, crashing over the convicted with no mercy. Beta George was the first to be hit; the force of the flames knocked him prone even as his clothes ignited. High-pitched screams pierced the air, finally fading as the fire died and left nothing but ash behind.

I needed to learn how to control it, to use it properly. As I read these words, the book suddenly grew hot in my hands. Unbearably hot. I tried to hold on, but it was like holding fire. The pages began to smoke, then flames appeared at the edges! I dropped the book with a cry. It landed on the stone floor, burning with a bright, clean fire. The flames only touched the book, nothing else. In moments, the book was gone. Only a small pile of ashes remained. I stared at the ashes, my mind racing. Why did the book burn? Was it my magic? Did I make it happen? Or was it meant to burn after being read?

Next, the wings of the book were burning, but it didn't stop as it tried to still get away. “If only I hadn't given up my fire powers—it’s going to get away; she will get away!” Ruby yelled, and it was true as the book kept trying, then Blake and Dante finally got to her, and holding their hands, they opened their mouths, and fire came out of them, shooting straight to the book. I could hear the screams of my mother and other creatures; my head was spinning, and I couldn't take it anymore. I was about to fall to the ground, but someone held me back. I looked up and was shocked to see my wife smiling at me.

Division 24 The man looked confused. "The deaths? It has been peaceful in this area." Beatrice frowned. "How so." She mumbled to see a figure leave the church through the other door close to a burner. "Ha! Something is burning." She said, and the father turned to have his eyes widened. They both walked to the pulpit of the church and behold a book was on the burner while the fiery fire burned. Father Jude had gone to bring water to quench the fire and when the fire that had been burning was quenched, Beatrice squinted her eyes to see that three of the books in the burner had burnt to ashes but one had not burned..not a single scratch on its body.

“Alsh firmate alite.” The fire ball flew from my hands and exploded against the dry wood. It caught, and soon the fire was burning through the wood quickly. I fed more wood, bigger pieces into the fire, and waited for it to catch. I wanted to be sure that this was going to be burning for a while before I moved on to the next step. Once I was sure that the fire was good, I flipped back to the page I needed. I read the entire page twice before I put the book back on the ground. I pulled my mother’s necklace out of my pocket and my father’s skin. I prayed to the Moon Goddess that I was right before I tossed both in.

Prologue II: Pyre, 3113 Pyre Av 5, 3113 Stephan Caliphus, King Everything was on fire the night he finished the book in the back room of a borrowed house. He laid his glasses down on the desk in front of him and rubbed his tired eyes. The crackling of flames could be heard as the city burned all around them. The blood curdling screams of the men in the streets where they died was enough to make the blood of the fiercest warrior run cold, but he was a man of empathy and it hurt him more than it did the others.

He burned it, or at least he thought he had. But the next day, against all reason and logic, the book was there again. It reappeared, untouched, beneath that very same tree. That’s when his desperation turned to madness. He didn’t just want the book gone—he wanted the tree that birthed it destroyed. He summoned flames so fierce they licked the heavens, engulfing the tree in a sea of fire. And yet, when the smoke cleared, the tree stood unharmed. Its bark was blackened but unbroken; the only change inflicted on the book and tree was that they were pure black since then.

She blinked back a few tears and nodded. He pushed all else from his mind, focusing on saving more lives, and took off at a trot for the entrance to Great Olympian Hall. But just as he was set to ascend the main steps, a dazzling and terrifying display of light filled the sky. He stepped back to better grasp the spectacle and his mouth dropped. A moving, convulsing snake-like fire had shot straight into the sky as if it were a tornado in reverse. Only this was no natural phenomenon. James’s chest clenched with despair because he knew of only one person or entity capable of creating the devastating fire: Oliver Burton.
