Uglies By Scott Westerfeld Novels & Stories

Manager Fang murmured. Danice nodded. The twins—Violet and Vincent—looked alike, yet they were complete opposites. Vincent was blessed with a healthy body but possessed a twisted mind, while Violet had a kind heart trapped in a frail body. When she was alive, she brought warmth and light into Vincent’s gloomy world. Despite her illness and the collapse of their family, Violet remained optimistic. “She really was beautiful when she was alive…” Danice agreed. Unfortunately, that beautiful young girl would later become the evil spirit that haunted the entire story—the cause of countless deaths.

He said walking through the vast site. The leader of the clan, walked to the last shelf and picked up a big black and gold book. On the cover was a huge dragon, written, legendary creatures, extinct and extant. Cassius handed it to the girls and said:" Good luck. Now the work is with the young." He laughed. Nayssa and Kyria looked at each other and smiled, they sat down on the large wooden table and sat down in the padded chairs. The book was really huge, with a thickness of 20cm. Nayssa began to flip through the pages. There were several creatures in that world besides wolves. And the similarity between them was the hatred for the werewolves who took their mother away from them.

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

"That bitch Vex emptied her entire perimeter for this!" He wasn't lying. Through the blown gate, Vex’s horde poured in like an absolute tide of meat and metal. There were scarred, rabid wolves the size of small trucks, roaring rogue humans armed with makeshift shotguns, and cutting through the center were things that made my blood turn to pure ice. Hybrids. Massive, pale-skinned monsters with elongated limbs and hollow gold eyes—the exact same genetic footprint as Ezra, but twisted, scarred, and wearing Thorne’s laboratory branding on their necks. Vex had stolen his data. She had stolen his stock.

Brandon responded. “They disappear at daylight. They go back to their den to rest ‘till night again,” Maggie pitched in. “They’re creatures of the night, evil beasts that would scare themselves in the light of day.” Maggie’s face twisted with disgust. “They’re damned ugly creatures.” Brandon was so taken aback by the look of disgust on Maggie’s face and the power in her voice that he burst into laughter. When no one joined in, he apologized and awkwardly got up to stroke Sugar, who moved nervously away from him.

"It's nice talking to you and all but I think I'll head back and rest. I've had a little bit too much." Without waiting for his reply I made my speedy escape. That had been really close… Bad mouth! My inner monologue almost got me in trouble. This is a side effect of sleepiness, makes one dumber by fifty percent. The trip back to the dormitory was nostalgic. Mrs Peterman bade me farewell yesterday and gave me my favourite physical book as a parting gift. As much as I loved research books and historical journals, my favourite physical tome was fiction. Fiction archive books were really rare to find as many of them were destroyed alongside civilisation during the Great Explosion. People had no

the handsome young man tried to make himself ignore the mysterious existence of a man and a child earlier. Finally he moved his feet again, walking towards the north. He continued walking regardless of his surroundings which had returned to silence as he found healing in his legs. Because when the young man fainted after being hit by a violent hurricane, he entered the utopian world created by Peter. A world filled with joy and prosperity in life. There is only happiness in there. While the men and children who met Royce, were actually humans with a character formed from the misery that Royce felt himself.

If it’s only for Alphas, won’t Chris get in trouble for letting his little sister get hold of it? I shrug and I skim through the pages, trying to find something interesting before trying to read about the werewolf caste system, just like what father said. Everything about the book is foreign to me. Goddesses, werewolves, vampires, phoenixes, foxes, fairies, and sirens? Oh, and before I forget, there’s mention of witches in the book as well. Did my life suddenly become a storybook? My eyes stop at a familiar word written in the chapter: Stars.
