“No movement outside.” I hovered over the keyboard, my finger shaking above the button. Twenty seconds. Then— The lights flickered. The walls trembled. A single *bang* echoed through the night. And the door exploded inward. --- Gunfire erupted. I hit the ground as bullets tore through the motel. Damien’s men. They had found us. Carter fired back, but he was weak. Michael grabbed him, shoving him behind cover. “Winnie, hit the damn button!” I crawled toward the laptop, heart pounding.

He looked like he was in agony. But I was staring at the fresh scar on the webbing of his right hand, my entire body turning ice cold. That scar was identical to the one on the hand holding the woman's waist in the profile picture of the anonymous poster I had just seen. If I remembered correctly, that scar appeared three months ago. I was two months pregnant then, and we were walking in the deep forest. A feral Rogue suddenly rushed out. Kael didn't think twice before shielding me, fighting the beast with his bare hands.

Beneath the carved warning, four crude tally marks stood out. After a moment's thought, I took the utility knife and carved another stroke into my skin. Searching my pockets, I found a folded scrap of paper… and a few more hidden in the corners of my room. [The monster is tampering with my memory. Trust no one. One guy died last year," Simon said, his eyes shining with amusement. Harriet listened, but she didn't look scared. She was looking at her car, a simple silver Mazda. She touched it. It looked old, but she could tell it had been taken care of. The tires were good. The engine sounded smooth and strong.

Damn it. “Now!” a voice shouted. And then chains. It was heavy and thick, covered in something dark. They wrapped around me before I could react. My wolf fought against them. But they burned. Like they were made to weaken me. Lucan roared, trying to reach me—but he got overwhelmed too. Ten wolves jumped him at once. He fought back. But not all of them. They dragged him down. Chained him too. “Get off him!” I roared, struggling.

It was as though my brain had short-circuited momentarily, the world blurring at the edges. My eyes went blank, a momentary lapse in consciousness. There were unbreakable chains on its bony ankles and wrists. Chains around its ribs and chains around the femur. And just to be cautious, the Hunters placed a collar on its spine. Even with the monster’s incredible and superhuman-like strength, it would not be able to break the chain so easily. For the chain was made from a melted black blade made by their Ancestors.

The ropes holding them up creaking eerily in the emptiness. All of the creatures were hopelessly silent. Having long ago learned that screaming only got them attention they didn’t want. The monsters seemed to prefer the ones that still had spark. Someone was walking in the darkness, but Udora couldn’t see whom. She knew from the weight of the footfalls that it wasn’t Mathis bringing her food. Far worse. One of the monsters. He grabbed a woman around the waist. Lifting her until her chained wrists came off a hook that was slung high above. Attached to the bottom of the rope.
