Due to the event that occured the previous night with the creature from Tartarus, Layla didn't sleep a wink. The image of the creature kept appearing behind her closed eyes; its terrifying appearance, its evil looking teeth and claws. When she managed to grab a few seconds of sleep, she was plagued with horrible nightmares of the creature attacking her and almost killing her.

I close my eyes. The game is over. But the nightmare? The nightmare has only just begun.

The events of the night had stirred something within him, a turbulent whirlpool of thoughts and emotions that defied his attempts to find respite in slumber. Nysaa's image was etched into his mind, the fiery spark in her sapphire eyes haunting him. Her words, her taunts, and even her drunken vulnerability kept replaying in his head like an unending loop. He couldn't escape the memory of her sharp tongue and the moment of unexpected frailty she had revealed at her home.

My heart is racing and adrenaline floods through me. “Do you hear anything else?” I flick my eyes to Lucas’s face. “There’s no way this is over yet.” “No,” he agrees. “It was too easy. Almost like it was testing us.” “And now that it knows it’s up against a vampire and a witch, they’re going to pull out all the big guns.” I close my eyes and shake my head. “Let’s just hope it’s not hellhounds again.” The floorboards creak and Lucas turns, looking at something I can’t see in the dark.

Now that Laila has said it, I do note that a lot of their skin is papery and frail, hanging off their bodies as if it almost wants to slough off like a snake. I grimace. “Shh,” Laila says, nudging me. “Pay attention.” I do as I’m told, turning my eyes back up to the God of Death. “We now invite our lovely Contestants,” the God days, gesturing out towards the center of the group, “to ascend the pillar and demonstrate for us their beauty. Please, all, come forward.”

They had buried it. The blood on their hand made the memory sickening. They clenched their fist, nails cutting into their palm. “It is for Selene,” they muttered, voice low, urgent, as though trying to convince themselves. “For her rise. For the new order. Everything else… means nothing.” But the shaking did not stop. When sleep finally came, it came heavy. And with it, a nightmare. They were in the main hall again. The rune glowed, brighter this time, a crimson blaze splitting the stone apart. From the cracks spilled shadows that screamed like children. A thousand voices, shrill, accusing.

“From high school horror to real-life horror… so many wins today. Please note the sarcasm.” At the entrance, I turned to Ty. “If anything touches me, I’m drop-kicking it.” He laughed. “Fair warning.” Creak. The door opened like every bad decision I’d ever made. “Let the horror begin…” Eli whispered in a fake ghost voice. Inside smelled like fake fog and bad decisions. My anxiety was through the roof—yet underneath it all, a sliver of excitement crept in. Ty screamed first. A mannequin head dropped, and his high-pitched yelp was so extra I nearly forgot my own anxiety from laughing.

[Welcome to Eternal Nightmare. Survival is victory.] The cold, robotic female voice blasted through the dark while I was sprawled on the couch doomscrolling. The next second, a white flash nuked my vision and forced my eyes shut. When I opened them again, my living room had straight-up rage quit and turned into a blood-red wasteland. "Okay, what the hell?" I squinted and spotted my six-foot-two husband, Adrian Chase, already doing the whole protective-dad thing with one arm around our son.

' Ethan shouted, pointing towards a wrought-iron spiral staircase at the end of one of the aisles, which lead up to the second level. Hurtling towards it, I was already on the bottom step, with Ethan pressing his hands into the small of my back as he urged me upwards, when my attention was drawn to movement in the shadows further down in the Vaults. The darkness shifted, split apart and where there had been one moving force, then was now six separate entities, approaching us with pace. The shadows moved into the light and I saw, with a deep horror, that they weren't shadows at all, but six identical Erelim marching in our direction, three leading, two in the middle and one at the back.

He mumbled a little before turning on his side but did not awaken. She shook her head, How can you be Dusk and Duskin? How can you pretend to be such a dark child when you are so kindhearted? Although she desired the answer to the question, she figured that she would never obtain the answer. Nightide remained secretive about their past. Hae Mina shook her head as she ventured up the staircase then fell on her bed in a heap. Her brain was too exhausted to push her back into her dreaded nightmares and so she slept heavily and deeply.
