“Lara…” he whispered. “Wait there… Don’t move…” An involuntarily moan escaped her and Christophe spun fluidly around. But by then Lara had already fled, her sole desire to escape. She raced down the steps that led into the gardens, her breath sobbing in her throat. “Lara!” she heard Christophe’s voice calling. Powerful lights came on, illuminating the outdoors. But Lara kept on running blindly, heedless of the shrubs that tore at her. The heel of one of her shoes snapped when she stumbled. She kicked it off and then bent to rip off the other one.

Never before could I have thought that these words would evoke such great emotions in me and would be associated with a person who completely turned my world upside down. I went near the window and from here, I can see the grainfield and other parts of district G. Torches are everywhere. They are like eyes on fire. There is really no electricity here with us. We abandoned ourselves and plunged into the fact that paraffin lamp is our only source of light when the night comes. The only device we have that is not powered by electricity but by the use of kerosene as fuel. A wick or mantle as a light source, protected by a glass chimney or globe. We wish for the gleaming moon to be embellished with stars as fluctuating golden embroideries at the night sky. And when the celestial bodies hide, we wish to have that blasted lightning off the field.

I felt rushed of coldness running through me, it made me reach for Walter as he wrapped me in his arm, rubbing my shoulder and giving me the warmth that I needed. "I need to ask my elders, this is way beyond my knowledge." She got up and reached above her kitchen cabinets, and retrieved some candles, then she closes all the shades and curtains making the room dimmer for her needs. Walter and I sat in silence in front of her as she does her thing, minutes went by as she communicates with her elders then the candles unexpectedly are blown out by a gust of wind, darkness surrounds us immediately. Walter grabbed my hand immediately, assuring me that I was safe, that he was next to me.
