AMBERLY The dust motes danced lazily in the dim, yellow light filtering through the high cathedral windows of the library's fourth-floor archives. Sitting cross-legged underneath a massive, solid oak reading table, I buried my face in my hands. The thick smell of decaying paper and old leather binding offered a tiny fraction of comfort. Nobody ever came up to the fourth floor. It was entirely reserved for ancient university records. My heart rate finally started to decelerate. The crushing anxiety of the biology lab slowly released its grip on my lungs.

By two o'clock in the afternoon, the sky had darkened again, a heavy fog rolling off the river and clinging to the high glass windows of the Law & Economics Archive. The archive was located in the deep basement of the Foundation Library, two levels below the main reading rooms. It was a cold, quiet labyrinth of tall iron stacks containing ninety years of handwritten ledgers, institutional charters, and expired trust deeds. Almost nobody came down here; the air smelled of dry paper, iron rust, and old leather.

It was a section filled with thick, old, leather-bound books, the air smelling of dust and aged paper, yet it was surprisingly clean and undisturbed. “You think too small,” Kieran stated, stopping before a towering, ornate bookshelf that seemed as old as the library itself. It was filled with crumbling, leather-bound volumes on obscure local geology. “My family helped fund this university for a reason. Our own archives are here, kept separate from human eyes.”

I flashed her another smile and walked around the counter. Mr. Penn stepped up, speaking with Suzanna as I made my way over to my library office. Pulling out my key, I unlocked it and stepped in. The text I was working through now was older than most of what I'd already covered, a coven record from three generations back, handwritten in the cramped and slightly irregular script of someone who'd been documenting as they worked rather than transcribing from memory. It covered dissolution compounds mostly, ways of breaking or interrupting magical workings through chemical means rather than direct counterspell. It was technical and dry and I'd been reading it for two hours without finding anything that applied cleanly to what I needed. And then I turned the page.

The class slowly filled up and I watched as Eli walked in out of the corner of my eye, laughing and joking about with each other. He caught my eye and glanced at Joey before taking a seat behind us. The screen suddenly went black and I cursed when the Agency's symbol appeared on the screen with large white writing underneath. ACCESS DENIED. "Fucksake," I muttered and shook my head. I was blocked from looking at a website about theoretical chemistry.
