The Shadows of Haverstone Manor

The Shadows of Haverstone Manor

Could it be connected to the book? Vivienne’s voice grew sharper. “You don’t understand the power you’re toying with. That book doesn’t belong to you—it belongs to the Haverstone legacy. And you’re not part of that legacy.” Emma’s jaw clenched. She had heard enough. Summoning her courage, she stepped out from behind the shelf, the book clutched tightly in her hands. “Maybe I’m not part of the legacy,” she said, her voice steady despite the fear coursing through her. “But Lord Haverstone chose me to find this. Not you.”

The Secret Whisperer

The Secret Whisperer

She kept her tone light, but her gut was doing flips. Christina didn’t answer right away. Instead, she pulled a small object from the folds of her blanket and set it on the table with the kind of care usually reserved for live grenades. It was a book, small and battered, the kind of thing that might get lost in a flea market bargain bin—if you didn’t look too closely at the cover. Leila leaned in. The leather was cracked, the pages yellowed like they’d been left out in the sun for a century too long. Stamped into the cover was a symbol: an eye inside a triangle, surrounded by curling, intricate lines that almost seemed alive.

The Kings Captive

The Kings Captive

I felt a surge of adrenaline as I scrambled to my feet, my heart pounding in my chest. I knew that I had to get out of there, to escape the king's wrath. But as I turned to run, I felt a hand on my shoulder, spinning me back around.. It was Lady Calantha, her eyes blazing with hatred and revenge. "You'll never escape me, Vera," she spat, her voice venomous. "You'll pay for what you've done." I tried to struggle, to break free from her grasp. But she was too strong, too determined. she dragged me back to the king, who was still standing there, his sword at the ready.

MY BEST FRIEND DOESN'T KNOW I LOVE HIM

MY BEST FRIEND DOESN'T KNOW I LOVE HIM

VERA I took a step back, but not fast enough. I took the whole of a half step backward before Freya was all over me, claws slashing without regard for anything else. It caught me across the eye, and I felt blood trickle out into my eyes. But she didn't stop. She took aim and landed a stinging slap across my face. While I was still blinded by the pain, she landed another, then grabbed my neck so hard her nails dug into my skin.

Night of the Rogues: Bound In Darkness

Night of the Rogues: Bound In Darkness

“I’m just saying you know, if the tea isn’t working, there are other ways to get through the full moon.” Just as I began to worry there was an invite into some creepy, twisted sibling orgy heading my way, Hope walks in. Straight into the cosy little scene Vera has created. Again. That must be the third time Vera has managed to have hold of part of me just as Hope strides in. Her fingers grip tighter as she drinks in Hope’s briefly confused expression. Vera might as well fucking straddle me and have the image printed on the walls, her grin is so blatantly triumphant. Hope is too cool to give Vera what she wants. She blanches then carries on. Striding past our table, she spoons herself a bowl

this book gave me mixed feelings, I couldn't invest in Cal and Hope (really didn't like her character but she got better in the end), but Cyrus and Mireille were so sweet and loving. and the smut... wow. but then the end broke my heart. terribly unfair ending for people that deserved happiness ...

Rise of a Queen - Book 2

Rise of a Queen - Book 2

With it, raging thunder clapped in the sky and lightning began to strike, forking across the grounds of the Royal Palace. We ran for cover, shifting when we reached the pergola. I had been seeing a little she-wolf, Vanessa, for a couple of weeks now. I hadn’t been that same playboy since Lamia. Not to say I haven’t had my share of girls in the past two years, but there was no more wham, bam thank you Ma’ams. I kept them around for at least a few weeks.

JWGStout has done it again! I loved the story and character development. The story really is a roller coaster, and I’m so happy for Lamia! But there are so many questions at the end, and so many opportunities for the other leading characters. I can’t wait to get into the next 3 books!

I really enjoyed this series. Many books on this platform have similar stories, which gets boring really fast. This book series kept me entertained the whole time. It had the perfect balance of romance and action. I enjoyed getting to know each character in more detail as each book was added.

Coming of Age the Fast Way

Coming of Age the Fast Way

I couldn’t sleep until I had worked it out and then I couldn’t sleep, because I had worked it out - at least I had half an idea. Deep down inside, I no longer believe Vera and her caring employer yarn. I don’t think her a bad person and do trust her, but she must have other motives. No one in the village would be surprised or angered if she showed Cedric the door. So why didn’t she? Perhaps my comment about a caring countess, that had earned me a slapped face, had been accurate. Sure as eggs are eggs, she is up to something! And now Sid, Charley and I owe her. Where will that lead?

QUEEN SURGEON OF RUIN

QUEEN SURGEON OF RUIN

Her voice was ice and velvet. I looked up. Veronica stood over me like a goddess of judgment. White coat immaculate, dark hair pinned back severely, exposing the long column of her neck I used to mark. Her expression revealed nothing. No triumph. No hatred. Just calm, absolute control. It was more devastating than rage. I pushed the signed contract toward her with shaking fingers. “Signed in blood,” I rasped. “As fitting.” She crouched gracefully, picked up the folder, and examined my bloody signature with clinical detachment. A faint smile touched her lips—small, satisfied, and so fucking beautiful it hurt.

The Mafia King’s Forbidden Obsession

The Mafia King’s Forbidden Obsession

He asked, but Vera couldn’t find a suitable answer to give to him. “Well… Welcome.” She stuttered, unable to stop herself from looking away from Caspian. “I didn’t know that you were back, Caspian.” “Oh, I see. That’s why you decided to bring down my house with your voice.” Caspian snarled at her, and she quickly turned to me and pointed. “But I was not the only one speaking, Caspian! Selene’s voice could have been louder than mine!” “I think you should go upstairs, Vera.” Caspian didn’t want to listen to her, and she had to force herself to speak even though she decided to remain standing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Readers often ask about tackling Ann Cleeves' Vera Stanhope novels. The series, which began with 'The Crow Trap' in 1999, was written and published in chronological order, making that the most logical path to follow. Starting with the first book allows you to witness the evolution of Vera, D.I. Joe Ashworth, and other recurring characters from the Northumberland & City Police. You'll see their professional relationships and personal quirks develop naturally, and subtle references to past cases in later novels will make more sense.

That said, the mysteries themselves are mostly self-contained, so you could theoretically jump in anywhere. Many fans actually discovered Vera through the brilliant ITV television adaptation starring Brenda Blethyn, which sometimes uses different plotlines or character introductions than the books. If you came from the show, you might be tempted to start with a later novel that features a storyline you enjoyed on screen. However, I'd still suggest going back to the beginning if you can. 'The Crow Trap' establishes Vera's formidable, unorthodox character in a way that the later books build upon, and it's a fantastic, intricate puzzle in its own right. The setting of the Northumberland landscape is almost a character itself, and that atmospheric presence is established right from the start.

For a definitive list, read them as they were released: 'The Crow Trap', 'Telling Tales', 'Hidden Depths', 'Silent Voices', 'The Glass Room', 'Harbour Street', 'The Moth Catcher', 'The Seagull', and 'The Darkest Evening'. Each one offers a deep dive into a closed community with secrets, with Vera's sharp mind and unconventional methods cutting through the lies. Reading them in order gives you the full, rewarding arc of her world.
