She was sitting at one of the vacant chairs and in her hand was a book. Whenever the dark witch was out, Madonna would sneak into her stock of books and read. She wanted to gain knowledge on how to defeat the witch. “You’re a traitor to the crown, you should be beheaded.” Madonna just shrugged. “And so is you. Don’t act like you’re clean because you’re not.” Veronica could only hiss in silence. she was about to curse the lady but then she remembered something. Madonna had said something earlier that piqued her interest.

Her wolf stirred weakly, then whined and curled in on itself under the weight of the drugs. “Easy,” a voice said from the shadows. Amused. Familiar. Haley lifted her head, teeth clenched. “You’re dead.” Veronica stepped into the torchlight, pristine as ever. No blood. No sweat. Her silver eyes glittered. “Not yet,” Veronica said. “And not before you watch.” Rage flared hot and reckless. “If you touched my children—” Veronica laughed softly. “Oh, don’t flatter yourself. They weren’t the prize.” She tilted her head. “You were.”

Veronica was a hunter of the dark; she fed on the sound of breathing. Veronica's voice was getting closer, her words dripping with malice as she taunted me. “You should have stayed in the light,” she sneered, the sound of her wet, hacking laugh sending shivers down my spine. 'You thought you were a queen, didn't you?' Veronica's tone was laced with venom. 'But you're just a rat in a fancy dress, and now the rat-catcher has come for you.'”

No interference. Luca’s voice came through on comms from above-ground: “You’re clear. World’s watching.” Ava looked at Veronica. “Ready?” Veronica didn’t smile. She didn’t nod. She just began. “My name is Veronica Hart. I was the first girl they called a prototype. I was not the first they tried to control. But I was the first one who remembered everything and didn’t break.” Her voice wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be. There was steel in it. Years. Names. Shadows. And the unflinching tone of someone who had survived not just trauma, but invisibility.

If she saw me zoning out one more time, she’d definitely start bugging me. We kept walking, and Veronica was her usual chatty self, typical Veronica, always rambling about milk tea and romance novels. She can stay up all night reading those love stories, but when it comes to our class textbooks? She’s already yawning by the first page. We were already inside the milk tea shop, I had my drink in hand, but Veronica was still at the counter, arguing with the server about the quality of the sugar used. A few more minutes passed before she finally wrapped things up and marched straight over to the table where I was sitting.

As the only girl, she was spoiled absolutely rotten and had a talent for manipulating people to get what she wanted. She was known as "The Viper" because all she cared for in her life was her status and image as a King mem'ber and she truly didn't care about anyone 'below' her status and would happily just shallow them whole to get them out of her way. Her bite was full of venom and always had severe consequences.

“Why don’t we give them a look? Just to see. No one has to know.” “Oh, I don’t think he’d like that. But . . . come to think of it . . . ” Her eyes suddenly lit up. “That’s actually a good reason to, isn’t it? Especially now, while he’s busy. Oh, maybe just a peek.” Mr. Pervis’s library was just down the hall. It was considerably smaller than Salem’s, so it didn’t take us long to find the ritual books. “There’s so many,” Loretta said, pulling a few off the shelf and flipping through them. “But they’re all so bloody confusing. Doesn’t he have any for apprentices?” She climbed a ladder to rummage through the higher shelves.

Back then, she realized, books were made to be works of art in and of themselves. Caleb lay on their bed, while Scarlet and Ruth were sprawled out on a pile of furs before the fireplace on the far side of the room. This room was so sprawling, that even with all of them in it, Caitlin still felt alone with her thoughts. In the adjacent room, she knew, were Sam and Polly. It had been a long day, and a long feast with Aiden’s coven and the king’s men, and they were all settling in for the night.
