My heart began to quicken as I hastened my pace, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. The memory of finding my mother lying on the floor, unresponsive, flashed before my eyes. My heart began to beat faster, and I picked up my pace, anxiety growing with each passing moment. As I neared the house, I heard the faint sound of the television, which only added to my concern.

Something horrible was coming and it was coming soon. I woke up with a start. My heart was beating out of control and I couldn’t find my breath. I jumped out of bed and started pacing the room. I spun on my heel and walked into the bathroom to splash water on my face. The water helped a little bit but I could still feel my heart beating out of my chest. I stood in the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked pale and I was shaking. I braced myself against the counter, my fingers gripping the edge of the sink. It felt cool against my skin but it made me shiver.

I can hear my heart beat faster. What is going on?

I felt my heart in my throat. "Vetta, Vetta, Vetta wake up. Vetta it's a dream, wake up. It's just a dream Vetta, please wake up." I wake up with a start, sweating profusely, my heart pounding. I try to turn, but I'm too weak to move. I close my eyes momentarily and take a deep breath. It's just a dream, it was just a dream. I feel my heart beat slowing to it's normal pace.

I wait a few more seconds for him to answer, the door opens just as I was about to get out of bed. I release a breath I didn’t know I was holding. My heart is beating so fast I can hear it in my ears. I had a flash of the night I woke up in my bed and he wasn’t there. I need to learn to not freak out when I wake up and he’s not there. I think to myself as I look around the room and then my brain gets doused with memories.

Avery's Point Of View I woke with a sharp, dreadful jolt, my breath hitching as though I’d been running for miles. My hand flew to my chest instinctively, pressing hard over my heart as if I could physically force it to slow down. It was racing... wild, uneven, like it had just escaped something terrible. “What was that…?” I whispered to no one. The room was quiet, peaceful even, yet my body refused to believe it. Slowly, painfully, I drew in one breath… then another. It took several minutes before the tight knot in my chest loosened enough for me to sit up.

There must be something different about being unconscious to being asleep, because unlike when she’s asleep, my vision comes to an immediate stop. I wake with a jolt and sit up in bed so fast that I elbow Bellamy in the face. “Ow, what the hell?” He grumbles, rubbing at his chin where I hit it. I am gasping for air, I feel like my chest is being crushed in a vice and my heart is beating so fast that I’m afraid it’s going to burst. Bellamy immediately sits up and pulls me into his lap.

“You’re going to stop resisting this connection. Just let it unfold, as it's meant to be.” That was the last coherent phrase I caught before everything blurred together, and my eyelids grew heavy, fluttering blissfully shut against my will. Suddenly, I was yanked back to consciousness, my heart racing as if I’d just completed an intense marathon through the woods. My bed felt like a swamp, drenched in sweat, and my pillow was practically soaked.
