MARKED BY THE SILENCED WOLF
As we entered the first of the narrow passages, the temperature dropped instantly, the shadows stretching out to greet us.
The whispers began then. They weren’t like the whispers of the East, which had been the cries of the dead. These were musical, a series of high-pitched notes that bounced off the canyon walls in a complex harmony. It was a beautiful, haunting sound that seemed to pull at the very threads of my soul.
“The Salt Singers,” I breathed.
“Stay back,” a voice rang out, echoing through the canyon. It was a woman’s voice, clear and powerful, but filled with a sharp, defensive edge.
