Chapter 86 — The Worlds Nobody Chose IF EVERYONE KEEPS CHOOSING BETTER WORLDS, WHO GETS TO LOVE THE WORSE ONES? The question remained beneath the handprint. Childish handwriting. No system authority. When they were about to reach and observe the book, Orcenal threw it to the raging fireplace. Ayja gasped while Anatoli frowned. But contrary to them, Orcenal kept his expressionless face. He whispered, “The connection between two worlds will be severed after this.” The three looked into the book that was slowly turning to ashes, their eyes complicated. “We can’t do anything about it,” Ayja said. “We really can’t.” Anatoli rubbed Orcenal’s back to give him just a little bit more support. The event that happened in the other world... they couldn’t change it even though they already knew what would happen. They were no longer Gods after all.

It started small, like a spark, then grew, filling every nerve, every fibre of her being. “Go! Go now, Clara!” her grandmother urged, her eyes glistening with tears and pride. Before Clara could question it, the warmth exploded outward. Time itself seemed to shiver. The firelight warped and stretched, the screams became distant echoes, and the ground beneath her feet disappeared. One moment, she was on scorched earth. The next, she was falling. The world around her blurred, colours and shapes twisting in impossible ways. She felt weightless, suspended between moments, suspended between worlds. Then, as suddenly, as it began, it ended.

Ademide said and they spoke for longer about other things. Annie's dad is sick, Roshan is still away on the trip, Daniel is bothering Ben, Ademide wants to meet her sister's man. The book!" he gasped, snatching it from her. With a flick of her wrist, the world around them froze. The bus, mid-approach; a man, mid-sip of coffee; a leaf, suspended in its fall. Silence descended, thick and absolute.

I thought of the world that was currently waking up to a silence it didn’t understand. But as I felt that tiny, second heartbeat pulse against my palm, I didn’t feel like a fugitive. I didn’t feel like a victim of a global conspiracy. I felt like an Architect. The first book was about the blood. It was about the betrayal and the breaking of the old world. It was about the trauma of the glass and the roar of the mountain. But the second book? The one we were starting right now, in this quiet French valley? That book was going to be about the Home.
