Before she could answer, I climbed into my bunk, pulled the curtain shut, and turned up my headphones to block out the world. From then on, I stuck close to my best friend on campus, Emma Collins, and cut off all interaction with my three roommates. When my dad and my brother, Andrew, learned from Emma that Ryan had scammed me out of love and money, they transferred me another five thousand and reminded me that spending money on men only brought disaster. I promised them I’d keep my eyes open and never again hand money to a man or believe in his sweet lies.

I tried offering her a small smile when we parked outside the dorm. Keira rummaged her purse for her key. She found it quickly and clicked open the door. As we pushed it open, the sight that lay before us dropped our jaws. Marti stepped in before I did. I followed closely behind, the door shut behind us. Our room lay in ruins. Rummaged through and ransacked. All our clothes were thrown out the wardrobe, and one of it’s door was hanging off a hinge. Almost every box lay upturned. No corner of the room was unscoured.
