The Duchess of Frostmane
I was alone for the first time since waking, and I found it less pleasant than I'd expected.
I made it three pages into the novel before realizing I'd read the same paragraph twice without remembering a word of it. I set it aside and reached for the sketchbook instead. I drew the courtyard below, the old snow along the paths, a stable hand carrying a bucket, and two guards talking near the wall. Someone had left a ladder against the granary roof, probably forgotten during a repair. I spent several minutes trying to get the angle right before giving up.
I worked on the outline for a while, then lost interest and set the pencil down. I was warm, comfortable, and thoroughly bored.
